What is the general consensus out there these days on the best overall trucking GPS? I had and older used Rand McNally that worked pretty well until It didnt. Havent upgraded yet but would like something that is sturdy, and could track miles on an older trucks for logs etc.

/shrug, I use google maps and a little common sense (this means not blindly following it into residential areas, ect).

Rand McNall 750 & Garmin Dezl 700 are the most commonly usrd truck GPS. RM doesn't last as long Garmin looks better. You will get used to whatever you use. They both make certain mistakes. Also carry a RM Motor Carrier Road Atlas.

Rand McNally hands down, I have a Rand TND 740 and a Garmin OTR 700, the Rand totally blows the Garmin away. I see quite a number of drivers that swear by Garmin but I don't see how or why, it's slow as crap figuring routes, seems to always take the longest route possible and is not very user friendly. Also see comments such as above about longevity of the Rand I still have my original TND 530 from 8 years ago and it still works have never had an issue with them going down.

I got 5 years of use from my RM 740 but I protected it like my first born baby. Unplug it during my 10 hours, protect it from direct sun during the day.

RM stopped updating the map just over 12 months from new.

The rand mcnally 730 was probably the peak in the whole cycle as far as useability (before the ui update)

On the 750 now and whenever it dies im probably just going to go to a garmin.

That's what I did. Then after ysing the Garmin, I sold it. I hated the user interface and adding specific intermediate waypoints was more difficult than with the RM. RMs are eadier to use but delicate. Garmins are beautiful and durable, but more complicated.

The current (750) iteration has it buried and clunky to add waypoints.

The 740 handled it adequately, but all its best features were from the legacy 710,720, and 730 systems

I bought one of the fancy garmin dezl ones maybe a few months ago and returned it after 2 weeks. It was so bad at routing it’s not even funny. Every single address I entered for a load would come back with at least 5-20% extra mileage vs google maps. It would completely avoid perfectly fine 2 lane highways in favor of the interstate every time even if it added serious mileage.

I enter the address in google maps, then follow along with satellite view. If it’s acceptable I roll on. If it’s not I just make a note where I would turn instead.
