Any pre-emissions, 90's or early 2000's motor from Cat, Cummins, or Detroit. They are all great motors, very reliable, and can be made to pull well. Parts are cheap for the Cummins and Detroit, and you can pretty much do your own in-frame overhauls in your driveway.

Going to Cali? You might wanna stay away from pre-emmisions trucks then. (Otherwise go for it)
Are you looking mostly at new, or used?

Asking this is like asking a room full of rednecks which pickup truck is the best...everyone has had good luck with their favorite and horrible luck with others...but the next person is exactly the opposite.

My experience...pre-egr engines...Series 60 Detroit. Egr motors are a pure pot luck. With the exception of International Maxxforce...hands down one of the worst engines ever released. You can't swing a dead cat in a truck stop without hitting a driver that has one and that has been in the shop repeatedly with those boat anchors. Other than that, you can ask for the maintenance records and research the engine at a dealer to see what kind of issues it has had.

My thoughts exactly! I was planning to make a reply just saying most any properly maintained engine that is operated by a driver that knows how to operate it is a good engine!

When I was driving van or refer and it was heavy, for me the best engine that I have come across is a Detroit Diesel 13 series. Then 15 is garbage.
