What is the best GPS program for a laptop. I would like to get one of those nice new Cobra GPS' but I already have a laptop and I know there are some good ones out there for it that are cheaper and just as good if not better because of the screen size.
Best computer program GPS!

Try and search Google and see what you come up with. I plan on getting this to go along with my atlas.

Seems to me it would be easier than using a laptop. -
I just use Streets and Trips which probably isn't the best but I've made it work for me. As usual never trust the computer generated route. I always click and drag the route to conform to the company routing I get.

the only truck gps software is co-pilot (i hate it) i use delorme AND streets & trips both work will but ALWAYS check then with the mca

If you can find an older version of CoPilot Truck Laptop, like version 9, grab it. I got mine from a guy selling software out of his truck in PA for $25. The maps will be out of date, but the routing will still be better than using Streets and Trips. I had both on my laptop, and typically what one couldn't find, the other could.

I use the new version on Copilot truck v 8 for handhelds, I expect the laptop version would use the same maps, and it has proven itself to be impeccable.
I had v 7 and it was horrible, the maps were outdated and more, but the new version is great!

For CPT v8 I've been using the comparison to Windows Vista and Windows 7. It's like a "fixed and beefed up" version of CoPilot Truck 11. It has several new features and is available as a download this time also.
- Quarterly map updates via internet directly from a button inside of the program. I have even found some spots where it was more up to date on recently-finished freeway bypasses that even Google Maps didn't have (and that is hard to do.) Almost every address that version 11 had issues with (I kept track of them) is now in there. And they put a button inside of the program to directly connect to their "Mapsure" feedback form to add new addresses yourself on the next quarterly update. They beefed up the Canadian maps and even added the ice roads there (which is a bizarre route to view across rivers and lakes.)
- Lane assist view. This is similar to the Rand McNally gps and the PC Miler x50 series units and is a very nice enhancement. Extremely useful to see what lane or lanes) to be in at freeway splits.
- Free weather info for any current location, destination or cities along your route.
- Free "friend connect" feature so that friends, family, dispatchers, or whoever you send and invite to can see where you are. (Of course this and weather, and traffic require that you have an internet connection in your truck.)
- It easily imports and POI files that you have from other sources and you can create your own custom POI categories and lists.
- Optional traffic and fuel prices inside of the program. There is a 14-day free look at this and then ALK has a $9.95 monthly fee for those if you find them helpful. In my tests, the live traffic function has been outstanding.
- They finally separated the weigh station alert from the former "truck services" category which would also alert you to every truck stop and exit (rendering that alert in version 11 basically useless.)
- They added low bridge icons that are clickable and give you the actual bridge heights.
- They added more vehicle dimension settings (height, gross weight, axle weight, length, width.)
- Printable route directions and state mileage logging now.
The biggest limitations that I have found are that Windows Vista is not supported, but XP and 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) are. And I wish that you could drag the route like MS Streets or Google Maps, but it is easy to manipulate the route using waypoints though. Also, it doesn't work with the CP101 square-black GPS receiver that came with version 11 unless you install it on the same computer that is already working with version 11 and that receiver. Next, I wish they would add a more rich address book instead of just a list of "favorites." I wish it had more voices to choose from. Finally, if you choose the download version YOU BETTER have a fast connection at the time because it is 1.56 Gigs.
If anyone has a further questions or wants to see a screenshot of a particular thing or whatever, just ask and I'll try to provide. I am extremely familiar with all previous versions as well if you want to ask some kind of comparison question.
ALK is offering it only as a download version, but we have also worked with them to expand to versions with a couple of different receivers and DVD versions here as well: http://www.dieselboss.com/Travrout/cptruck.htm

I dont use a GPS for all my routing. I want one mostly for the simple fact it keeps out of route milage down when your trying to find a shipper or receiver. You know where to turn and what lane to be in and all that stuff.

I use iguidance. Best one. No truck routing, but best navigation. Best night view.
I love it. May crash in canada or in places like Montana, but still the best.
On my 1600*1200 display it can show street level map of whole city. 20 miles radius -
I want to buy too the Copilot version 8 but as was said above it has a beef with Vista and I wont replace my laptop for Copilot.
But I bought a Droid X and I was anxious to download the version for Droid but the reviews made me sigh. They said is not compatible with the window mount. The moment the device is placed in the craddle the issues erupt. So I wont buy it coz I dont want to keep the phone in my hand while driving.
The Volvo dash shake like a crazy goat and if I will buy a dash craddle I'm affraid I will destroy the device from repeated shocks.
So for now I will stick with my old Street&Trips. The only thing that make me to keep S&T is that add-on called truckstopplus (if I'm not mispelling the name). I have it since two years now and is a great gadget to have it.
I have to admit that I'm internet+laptop+GPS addicted and I cannot drive without it. One day my laptop was so upset and didn't wana start and I have to drive the whole day laptopless. OMG, it was so depressing. That day I realized that I do have an addiction. Is OK if u guys laugh but I'm just honest.
All in all: I love the electronic gadgets. I'm just an old kid. Actually the only difference between a man and a boy is just the price of the toys.
