Hey there! My husband and I are looking into OTR team driving. Our hearts are pretty set on this, as it seems the best way to save money while young and without a college degree. We are east of Atlanta, Ga if that matters.
A few months ago, he got approved to start with Swift but we had to take care of his father. That delay has passed so we’re now ready to both start getting in touch with companies that we can either do our schooling through, or that would be suggested to go through once we complete schooling using a loan or grant. As I mentioned earlier, we would like to be team driving OTR so the ideal companies to do that through would be appreciated.
One other thing to mention: it is important the company is semi relaxed about dogs, as our 45lb Puddelpointer will likely be traveling with us. Thanks for any suggestions & leads!
Best company to provide CDL training for husband and wife to team drive OTR

Attend a private or community college cdl school, then you have an excellent chance of hiring on with a team outfit where you can make good money.
Old Dominion Freight Lines hires new cdl grads and runs teams coast to coast. Some husband/wife teams there are making 1/4 million dollars a year to the team.
Contact Old Dominion and ask which school in your area they hire from. They're picky about which schools they hire from.
Don't know about their pet policy; better ask.

aussiejosh, MBAngel, Brelioness and 1 other person Thank this. -
Other team outfits to consider that hire new cdl grads:
Quest Global - Cartersville, GA - sometimes waives the 3 mos. experience requirement for husband/wife teams. Can take the pet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FFE (Frozen Food Express) - teams & pet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Covenant Transport - teams & pet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Freymiller - teams & pet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
National Carriers - teams & pet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can contact companies now, even before school starts and ask about husband/wife teams & pets. All those companies will hire new cdl grads even if website may have "experience required."
Pay for school yourself. That way your not tied to the companies that paid for the schooling.. Traveling in a cramped space with a team driver is hard enough.but when you add a dog. It makes it even harder. trucking can be very unforgiving... sleeping with a inexperienced driver at the wheel. Good luck.
Hubby and I found out that there is a govt program that pays for trucking school. Go to the schools in your area and interview them all, and ask about this program. It's a full grant. If you don't qualify, then an accredited school can do a loan for you. Your community college can also help with grants and loans and have good cdl classes.
Like others have said... don't go to a trucking company school, you can get locked into a contract with a company that sucks. There are a lot of posts on this forum about good and bad companies, so read them. Chinatown is the expert on which companies to work for in your area.
After school, most companies have a training requirement. I heard that covenant trains couples together for example. I also went and spoke to the manager at my local Old dominion distribution center, and he said that he'd train us in separate trucks with different trainers, but we can be home daily during training, so we can still "be together" while training. They are a "Less than load" company, that does otr (line haul), and local stuff, so they have more flexibility with training. It can be hard to get on with OD, but teams are pretty valuable in this industry - we have someone we love in the truck with us, so we're more likely to be careful, plus the truck keeps moving.
Remember though, it is being locked together in a small space, 24/7. You have to make rules like.. "the driver is king of the cab". It also stands to reason that "the rider is king of the sleeper". Make a plan for worst case... Have enough money saved to send someone home if need be. Don't put yourself in the position of fighting, and one of you wants out of the truck or to quit, and can't get home. This is one of those industries where stuff happens, so be prepared to get yourselves home from anywhere in the country. Pack light, and don't keep really important things in the truck... there are stories about trucks catching fire, and everything inside is toast. Pack light, so if you do have to bus home, you can take your stuff.
Good luck, and remember, the life is what you make it. I'm looking forward to "paid tourist".Brelioness Thanks this. -
