My husband got his CDL through CRST, and the more we're looking at them and his experiences with them, we're quickly learning that they're not a company we want to stay with long term. I felt like I saw a thread previously listing trucking companies, but I can't seem to find it, so I wanted to ask in here. We intend to team drive and would prefer a company that actually looks out for the drivers. We'd be happy doing OTR or Dedicated. By the time I have my CDL, he'll have been driving for about 6 months, and I will, obviously, be a brand new driver. Any suggestions on the best companies to drive for as a team would be immensely helpful! Especially if you have info on pay, home time, benefits, and anything else. (If you don't, I'm happy to do the research!)

    Where is your location?
Old Dominion Freight Lines is good for husband wife teams and they hire new cdl grads.
Pay is excellent with potential of $225K split.

I suggest, if at all possible, to ride with him for a week or two, to see if the lifestyle fits, BEFORE you go to school etc. Good luck !

    We're located in South Carolina.

Driving with him before getting my CDL is not an option. He's already on a team and that isn't done with his current company. We've been planning on this for almost a year.

I'd put Old Dominion as first choice.
Then these hire new cdl grads; so you and husband can go here:
    Mountain River Trucking
    Palmetto State Transportation
    Bottomley Enterprises

Some people will give you some great answers based on the questions that are asked. That is they will answer with what they think you want to hear. I am surprised that in the 2 1/2 hours since you asked, nobody has said what I am about to tell you.

Nobody, and I mean nobody should ever drive team when the lead driver has only 6 months experience! Each season presents it's own challenges, and your husband won't have driven in the summer yet. Neither of you will have an experienced driver to teach you the ropes.

The megas are infamous for putting drivers who are not ready for the road put there by themselves.

There is no way to know if you can sleep in a moving truck until you try it. Most drivers ride with a trainer when they start and during that time they must TRY to sleep while truck bounces down the road. Many of us cannot sleep in a moving truck. I doubt I got 2 consecutive hours of sleep in the 8 weeks I was with my trainer when truck was moving. I was never more tired in my life. Once I laid in the bunk and it started hitting potholes I could not sleep. I don't know anyone you can't wake up by shaking them. Riding in a moving truck is shaking every few seconds plus the car-induced emergency braking every single day. Try it before you decide.

There is no way for me to "try it" before I get my CDL, that I'm aware of, unless you have suggestions?

And how much experience should a senior driver on a team have? He and his co-driver finished school at the same time and are on the road together. I understand getting appropriate training and experience, and I'm perfectly willing to drive with a trainer for a bit if a company wants me to before putting us together, but we want to drive together.

I also want to clarify that we're not changing companies as soon as I have my CDL. We're looking for options.

I think you'll be very comfortable sleeping in the new, modern trucks on the road today. When I started, may as well just strap into the passenger seat, rather than try to rest in the sleeper.
I teamed shortly & fairly recently in a new Volvo and the ride was so smooth, I slept comfortably.

[IMG]Mountain River trucking takes great pride in their state-of-the-art fleet by having each impressively painted in their signature color scheme of burgundy and gray. Every unit is washed weekly, refueled, serviced, hooked, and ready for their drivers to move your load. Each tractor houses a Cummins engine. For the comfort and safety of Mountain River drivers the tractors assures a quite cabin for passenger relaxation, and designed for ease of maneuverability. The cabin includes built in refrigerators, bunk beds, built in satellite radio availability as well as tire pressure monitoring system readouts in the cabs.
