    Hello everyone,

I've been a long time lurker, but never created post until now. I've always been interested into getting into the trucking industry and have decided to take the plunge. Reading the many post about the quality of fly by night schools have persuaded me to pursue a community college for class a training. I think the lengthier period in a community college is more beneficial. I've googled a number of schools that have popped up in the search engine on this site such as Houston Community College, Caldwell, and Georgia Northwestern, and the list of options are expansive, and I'm not quite sure which is right for me. I'm looking for a school that has a low instructor to student ratio, small class sizes, a minimum of 180 training hours, affordable, and has a reasonable graduation rate.

I'm wondering based on your experience, which community college fit these particular criteria? Thank you in advance for viewing and responding to my post.

I would say look for one that also has a PTDI program. I went to CNM(central new Mexico university). At the time I went it cost me $1100.00 for everything to get it completed

I am just finishing school at Chattahoochee Technical College in Acworth, GA. I researched schools for a few months and wanted to go to a technical college program for the extra skills and driving time, plus it was cheaper. I visited several programs and decided on CTC because of the reputation of the program, the experience of ALL of the instructors and the fact that you train on what you will be driving. I think you are wise to go the technical college route for all of the reasons listed, but for sure visit the schools and of course depending on where you live is a factor. For me, i was willing to drive 2 hours one way every day to go to this school when other schools were closer. I realize that not everyone can go to a 7 or 8 week program for many reasons, but if you can I think you will reap the benefits in having more time to acquire the skills needed.

I'm about to start class at Florida Coast Career Tech, it cost $2500 for an 8 week course. They only have 12 students per class. My Military VA is paying for the class thou. It's like 4 weeks longer than other schools because they also cover preventive maintenance for your truck..ect.. and MAKE you drive like 800 actual miles on the road while in school....from what I read and was told.

    I like that. :)

I just graduated from the program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC. 8 week program with a great reputation, well over 160 hours. Plenty of driving time, plenty of range time to practice your backing and maneuvering, plus a ####### classroom component. I don't live in the Smithfield area, so I found a room to rent on Craigslist, which worked out well. Cost is a little under $1000 for in-state tuition. Thanks again for the replies. I forgot to include PTDI certified on my list of requirements. I heard about the reputable standards PTDI schools have and how they provide a well rounded education for those looking to get into the industry. I'm inclined to go to a school that is out of my geographic location provided that it is of good quality. I will take a look at the suggestions provided and let you know when I made my decision.

Silent... are you looking for a school in your area, or anywhere?

    Where are you located?

In the Houston area, there is HCC and Lonestar College. Lonestar is a training location for Stevens Transport and is also an approved school for Schneider

How far are you willing to travel for a good college?I know of one located in Fort Dodge,Iowa.Back then it was a 10 week course for $3500.00 and you stay at the dorm free.I had alot of fun.I heard now the CDL course is longer but well worth it.Back then we got to deliver overnight loads. If you have a certain weakness like shifting or backing, the instructors will work with you one on one.Does'nt hurt to give them a call and talk to the director.Google Iowa Central Community College or ICCC.They may even help with transportation.Schools are somewhat like trucking companies, they recruit students and some provide transportation.I think this one does.

My son completed his training at University of Arkansas Newport. From his description it was a solid course, definitely a notch above bare bones CDL training but not quite the 10 week course some others offer. If I recall the whole program was under $2,000 and included local housing.

I really wish there was a community college here in Connecticut that had a CDL course.
