Total newbie here! I currently have a 4' FireStik on a spring mount in my pick up bed that works well, but I would really like to use a 102" stainless steel whip. Obviously because of height problems, if I were to bend it in a curve or tie it down with something non mettalic like a strong fishing line would I be able to recieve and transmit safely? Just curious.

I just let mine hit stuff, #### it. Have yet to have one break, and if it does, they're cheap as piss, I'll just get another.

'Bout all I feel I need to know.

Not sure why anyone needs 9' of antenna, but hey, if it increases your 'no panties' broadcast: *thumbs up*

The closer any part of the whip, especially the tip, is to metal surfaces of your vehicle, the more your antenna system will be de-tuned and the less efficiently it will perform on transmit and receive. I groaned at the old Andy Griffith style mobile antenna setups with a bent over and tied down whip. Used to see this a lot in the 1960's and very early 1970's. As long as the whip is not touching metal on your vehicle, you can achieve limited range on transmit and receive. If it touches the body metal, it will cause a short circuit in your system giving very poor range and and possibly damaging your finals on xmit.

Because 1/4 wave of CB is 9 feet.

Anything less compromises your transmit and receive. Even those fiberglass whips with the small copper coiled wire inside of them. They work but most of your signal is lost as heat.

9 foot solid whip CB antenna is hands down THE BEST CB antenna.

So let's say I can make a 102 whip work/mount on my 379, you mean it will perform a lot better than my Wilson 2k original (not barjunk) antenna?

Yep, back in the day drives used to mount them on the edges of the front bumper.

The only way you'd know for sure would be to test it. Personally, I'd guess that a properly grounded Wilson 2K, or even a 5' Firestik, up on the mirror or top of the cab would beat a 9' whip mounted way down on the bumper, but that's just me and 55 years of ham radio experience guessing. I've been wrong before.

On my next 34, I'm going to put my shiny new 102" whip on my Cascadia mirror mount. I expect it to whack low bridges, traffic lights, and the occasional flying critter.

The whip that I got wasn't one of those cheap-### Radio Shack specials, either. I got a heavy duty one from DX Engineering in Tallmadge, Ohio. It's not going to break on me; probably won't even bend. That sucker can double as a weapon.
