How do you guys get customers when you become a owner operator? I live in NJ and see 10000000's of trucks coming in and out of the ports here. I was wondering where you get customers to deliver for after obtaining all the stuff needed to becoming owner operator. ?

Load boards are a good place to start. It would be a good idea to call some load brokers and ask them if they take new authorities, tell them what your plan is, they will tell you what their main lanes are ... eventually you will have a handful of them you do regular business with and it should be smooth from that point. It is hard to run wild all over the place as a one truck show, much easier to stick to a few lanes for time of year and keep the good customers around ...

Thanks, is it common for people to buy trucks and pay other people to drive them? Basically starting your own trucking company and having your own drivers

I think I would stick to a one truck show with yourself behind the wheel for a good while.

It means there's a broker who has a load ready to get moved, you need to provide your own trailer in order to do this load. If you want to work the ports out of NY/NJ then you need about 15 trucks in order to get signed up with the steamship lines, etc. An owner operator with just 1 truck will not be able to get any work at the piers.

No offense, but being from there I can tell you most rates are very low. Unless you find a steady deal or hook on to a fed ex deal, your options for decent income aren't there. Load boards are the lowest of the low, it's kind of a last resort thing. If you really want to make cash then you're going to have to look to getting out of the tri-state area cheap and finding that good paying stuff going in.

So you want to start a trucking company with zero experience in trucking. So little, that you think a van load is a vehicle that needs transported. Hire a manager that knows what they are doing, or just go out tonight with all that cash and blow it. The end result will be the same.
