1 Whats the procedure supposed to be in CMV crossing an unguarded cross? Complete stop to look before proceeding?
2 Thats a well known spot to the locals, but every few weeks an out of state steering wheel holder tries to take that route as a shortcut, get rewarded with a nice $10-20k plus bill between the wrecker and fine

    From the FMCSA.
§ 392.11 Railroad grade crossings; slowing down required.
Every commercial motor vehicle other than those listed in § 392.10 shall, upon approaching a railroad grade crossing, be driven at a rate of speed which will permit said commercial motor vehicle to be stopped before reaching the nearest rail of such crossing and shall not be driven upon or over such crossing until due caution has been taken to ascertain that the course is clear.

Penalty for not doing this is the same a for a placarded truck not stopping at a crossing. Big fine and a 60 CDL suspension for the first offense. I can think of a couple crossings that trees obscure the tracks so much that you would have to stop to actually see if it's clear. I've never seen an unplacarded truck slow down for these, including me.

The train accident is easily going to be hundreds of thousands between damage to the train, tracks, truck, and possibly surrounding property. I meant $10k for the "stuck in the notch" truck. The tow companies make a pretty penny when they get the call from VT troopers, and they fine the drivers heavily.

    RANT ON,
    :angry4:
Collecting any "penalty" applied to google (I prefer gaggle), would be interesting.
How is any Mapping System to be held accountable for the incompetence of State and City Controlled Streets, Roads, and Highways??
Google only needs to eliminate Smugglers Notch from Commercial Motor Vehicle Mapping Systems, as well for all other Roads that have been Pestered/Annoyed By/From Unwanted Heavy Truck Traffic.
SAME applies to ANY STATE that cannot, for whatever discombobulated reason(s), CEASE Heavy Truck Activity on Roads NOT DESIGNED for HEAVY TRUCK ACTIVITY (except Heavy Wrecker Truck Rescue Trucks) and that INCLUDES R. R. CROSSINGS.

There will continue to be "lost drivers in Heavy Vehicles" (since English is all but gone in Trucking) taking whatever roads they deem a direct connection from generally parsed senility or an actual ROAD ATLAS, God Forbid, regardless of said roads being thru routes, or to a dead end or off a mountain or into a lake. :bunny:

Except for Some Roads that have Flat R.R. Crossings, I usually DID, in 70' Combos, slow down because MANY crossings, pond to pond, REQUIRED some speed reduction if not serious speed reduction because of the Tracks being higher than the Road. Usually crossed in 2nd gear or whatever those pesky automatic trucks used.
Some Crossings were "Beats Me" as well "Floor It Baby".

There's a local double tracks (for Slamtrack as well LONG Freight couplings) crossing near our house that was designed for off road Vehicles to cross at 45+ mph but everyone else needs slow down to around 25 to avoid a stretched Shocks or an airborne event.
I have seen ZERO Class A Combos speed at that crossing.
