Well the other day I was underneath my truck just having a look and I happened to notice the wires on my starter are corroded I also noticed that the wire insulation is exposed ware the terminals are and that's all so corroded I also noticed the positive wire at the altonater is corroded. The truck starts fine it started when it was 1 degree last week....so my question is do I put a new starter in and all new battery cables in? Can i purchase new cables from international pre made? Or should i buy bulk and crimp them my self? Does anyone what gauge the main battery cables are?

i'd also highly recommend some sort of (like) battery coating terminal spray, to protect the cable ends from moisture/corrosion. i have a can of such, and it is red (the spray chemical) . i got mine at (i think) pep boys.
sorry, off the top of my head, i can't say what gauge the cable should be.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
2/0 size wire.
Your starter should be ok.
You can get cables from most auto parts store.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
I make my own. I use a crimper that you hit with a hammer. Does a nice job.

Why change the starter? What's wrong with it?
If you're gonna make your own cables I'd put heat shrink with sealant over the crimped area of the lug to keep moisture out of the wire.Steel Dragon, earnies2 and xsetra Thank this. -
You really need to shop that as the mark ups can be crazy like the glass industry.
Size will change with the number of cables. Normally replace with the same. At one time I bought cable from a welding supply company. There is a truck parts distributor in my area that custom makes cables at a fair price. See what is available in your area. May be better off to make your own as mentioned.Steel Dragon and xsetra Thank this. -
Most of that corrosion will be surface face. You can just disconnect your batteries, then remove your starter and alternator cables and clean them with a wire wheel or even just a barbecue brush to remove it. Then smear dielectric grease over them and reinstall. That is probably all you need. This is regular maintenance that needs to be done every couple years anyway.
