so i'm a new owner/operator and am leasing my truck to a company and they gave me a list of things i need to get before i can start. i got my bobtail insurance today, so all i have left to take care of is my 2290
well i attempted to file online and went to a few different sites and all of them ask for my EIN number. well a couple people told me that as a sole proprietorship i don't need an EIN, or that my EIN would be my social security number. but i'm not able to enter my ssn and they won't let me leave the EIN box blank.
so do i need an EIN? figured someone here would have all the answers i need. google wasn't much help surprisingly. and google seemed to confirm that you don't need an EIN for a sole proprietorship, but didn't spell it out plainly
thanks for any help you might have to offer

You do not actually need one, but it is free and easy to get. I would strongly suggest it. You might be in a situation of having to provide 1099's as well for payments made to non corporations.

You do actually need an EIN, as the IRS will not allow you to use your SSN, even if you are a sole proprietor. You can file IRS Form SS-4, or go to http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small...n-Employer-Identification-Number-(EIN)-Online. You will get your EIN immediately after completing the required information, and can then complete your 2290 filing.
BORNtoROAM and Roadmedic Thank this. -
Unless it has changed, the irs would not accept a2290 form without an ein number.

You are right on the requirement. -
All good. Nothing is constant with the IRS except change.

It keeps me in business, so no complaints here.
