Hooked to a load that the previous driver left a (shipper's) scale ticket that said the tandems we're at 34,020. I figure no big deal. Got red light on the prepass and had to scale at the Utah POE and their scale said 34,300. Didn't get called in but what will Utah let you get away with?

I thought I saw a list of all the different states and their allowable tolerances but can't find it.

You can burn off a smidge of fuel and be ok. But you generally can expect most scales with preweight to look at you more carefully any time your gross is over 77K

I try to cat my loads where possible. I don't like to visit mr DOT any more than I must. I aint doing anything wrong mind you that I want to do business with Mr DOT. But it's their house, my money. I like to keep some of that thank you.

Unless they’re all hard , most scales give 500 as long as you’re not over gross . To compensate for error on their scales

Discretion would be my guess, 300 isn't much if you're under gross, and bridge law isn't considered.

    Scales at shippers aren't guaranteed.

The POE east of SLC on I-80 is known to read heavy. I've gone across those scales at least a half dozen times shortly after getting a CAT scale and the POE is always at least several hundred pounds heavier.

If you’re not stopping on the scales for at least 3 seconds, the numbers are hardly worth noting as “official” and they won’t make any call-ins for weight until they’ve had you back up and stop momentarily to get a true weight. Initial roll-on weight is always 200-400 pounds heavier than actual and they allow for this

If you’re under gross most states out west will let you slide by a few hundred over on your axles.

On average, most states will give 1 to 2 percent over on any single axle set as acceptible as long as your not over gross.
