My husband has been driving for Averitt for a few months now. He keeps asking for more miles and longer runs, usually brings home between $700 and $800 per week. His truck is a piece of crap, broken down twice and they send us all this propaganda in the mail about their wonderful equipment. His loads get changed at the last minute, several times now, he's driven an hour to his domicile to have them change it and tell him he's not going out till the next day. Is this all just typical stuff or should he be looking for another job? Oh, and do any trucking companies pay you for the actual miles you drive?

Trucks break down. Its amazing they don't break down more considering everything they're asked to do.

How long has he been driving? Has he burned dispatch before? Telling them he could deliver and failed to make it?

Loads change depending on need. Its a fast paced business. And no one pays on the mileage you actually drive. Drivers would be taking the long way every time just to get a few more pennies

He has been driving with them for 6 months, worked for Schneider before that for 3 months.

Always sends a check call when he's running late for appointments. Sometimes the dispatcher schedules him so tight it is mathematically impossible to get there on time.

Nothing works right on his truck. The APU worked for about a week. He's asked them to fix it several times, they never have the part. He drives to places where you aren't allowed to idle but when it's 10 degrees outside you don't really have a choice.
I think it bothers me more than it bothers him. I'm at home, I get the mail. Averitt is always sending things bragging on their equipment. The last time the truck broke down the mechanic told him his truck was a waste of time, Averitt insisted that it needed to be fixed. He just keeps his fingers crossed and prays that it will start and get him where he needs to go. I've even seen Averitt billboards that say something like- I chose Averitt because of the equipment- It makes me crazy.

    Where is your location?
He should be taking home more money.

That's actually not true. I get paid actual hub to hub mileage, stop pay, holiday pay, quarterly safety bonus, etc.

People just need to look for the good driving jobs.

Sadly in my opinion it comes down to the driver. No matter how many jobs he gets the dispatchers will understand him. You need to change your attitude and explain the situation to them. If they don't agree, move on.

@Lovemytruckerhubby If your husband is in truck load which that's what it sounds like, the miles there are not very consistent unless you been there for quite sometime and you have a pretty darn good relationship with your fleet manager, also when I was truckload and my apu was out which sometimes it failed, I would just send a freeform message stating i need to idle apu is out and their response was 10.4. If he has issues on miles equipment or anything else call david boyles thats the main guy who oversees truckload, granted hes not going to pull miracles but at least he can work with your husband, also tell your husband to either change divisions to LTL or linehauls and the money is a lot better and consistent. I'm not a cheerleader for averitt but they been fair with me and I understand it works for some and for others it doesn't. Good luck to you and your husband and hope y'all find the right option .

I worked for Averitt for 18 years on their biggest dedicated account. I never had problems like you are describing. Their benefits are top-notch. Most of their trucks are good to better than average, although it's possible to have a lemon. Up until about 2008 they used to turn in trucks at about 600k miles. They now keep them until repairs are uneconomical.

If he is talking to his FM and not getting the answer he wants (within reason of course) I.E. a truck that doesn't need to be in the shop twice a week; more miles, etc... He has every right to go over his head to the next level... That is unacceptable to me... If his truck is constantly in the shop, then he needs a different one, plan and simple. As for miles and such... that answer has so many different reasons things change, I can't even begin to comment on all of them. but in the end it's the miles at the end of the week that matter. If ya'll are happy with it, then how he gets to that point doesn't matter in the bigger picture. Averitt, like any company, is in the habit of making money... We drivers are used and abused to do that. Seems like it anyway. :p

I hope it works out for him. Averitt is and has been a decent company for me personally, but like any of them, it's not for every one. There is some good info in the Averitt forum. You both might want to read some of it.

Edit: I need to also state that getting an attitude towards his FM and getting pi55y will get him no where. If he has an intelligent conversation with him and is willing to let the FM find a good truck, then that will help him in the longer term. Stand your ground about wanting a new truck, but be willing to wait for a decent one, I guess is what I'm saying.
