Hello All,
I'm in the military right now, but have a dream of becoming not only a trucker but a profitable business owner. I have bee doing extensive research into the cost of running under my own authority. In doing my research, I have found that the only number I am having trouble approximating is how many miles I can expect to run tin my first 1-5 years. I have never been OTR or even driven a truck for that matter. So, I leave the question to you experienced O/O and single truck authority runners. How many miles did you run in your first year?
I'll be based out of North Texas running flatbed freight. I intend on running loadboard and brokered freight to get my feet wet until I can make connections with shippers directly. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Average miles ran per year

A good approximation is 10k/mo or 120k/yr. Yes you can run more legally, but you have to consider home time, down time etc. It will depend on you, how hard you want to run etc. Then there's revenue miles and non-revenue miles.

100 for a year is probably a good average. Unless you have some special niche market or are a workaholic.

100,000 total miles I did 90,000 last year I think but it seemed like I was home more then working

Thanks for the responses so far. I was thinking it would be close to 100,000. I'm pretty determined to make it work in the first year, so I will most likely run as hard as legally possible at first and then kick it down after a year or two to something more manageable and family friendly.
Allow me. brings up a good point about not all miles being revenue miles..something that I hadn't considered before. I'll have to make some adjustments for that in my financial analysis! Thank you!chimbotano Thanks this. -
Here's a thought for you. Running under your own authority, don't think miles, think dollars. A company driver is paid per mile so they run all of the miles they can. You want to run all of the dollars you can. When rates are up, go hard, when rates drop slow down . Why wear yourself and your truck out for nothing? It's a different mindset.

iv made more money on 45k mile years than 100k mile years. maybe not in gross but in net taxable income.
