Looking to be a new O/O just trying to run numbers, curious as to average cost per mile to run your own truck. I’ve been a company driver for local work for the last 20+years. Looking to lease on with company but not lease purchase. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

My average fuel cost per week could be wildly different from yours. I budget for 6mpg@$3/gal which works out to $0.50/mi fuel cost. Last year I was closer to 0.37/mi but that was when fuel was cheaper.
As far as total cost per mile....that's going to swing wildly depending on truck payment and maintenance. Some of these lease guys are paying $700+/week just to "own" a truck. Add in maintenance, tolls, taxes, insurance and everything else and you end up chasing miles just to cover your nut. Try to avoid the companies that just pay a set rate per mile (unless its gauranteed 1.80+) and work somewhere for %.Sfrappier and Paddlewagon Thank this. -
It’s going to vary too much to give a solid answer. Right now I’m around $.85/mi for all my variable expenses, but I’m also running heavy through hills on a lot of two lanes and staying local in PA (expensive state). Hauling lighter and/or more aero friendly freight (currently I run flatbed) out across OH and IN on the interstates can cut my variable expenses by $.15-.20 or more.

rates are high now and seem to be going up so this is an excellent time to start .... % is the way to go especially when rates this high .85 cents is quite a bit higher than my total cost per mile but he may be figuring in a truck payment ( getting that first title in your hand is probably the nicest day you will have truck driving ) I am leased to landstar and that works for me but that's not for everyone. not working hard and still net 100000 haven't run out of my 70 in over a year . my expenses stay around 75 cents a mile about 45 cents for fuel last year .

While you are working for someone do all the math as if you are the owner adding in your wage, all maintenance and permits so you know how to do it before you get there.,

in Ohio so that helps most everything I get is 3 or over long hauls in 2.50 range I do quite a bit of short haul 250 mile radius that get up in 4 to 6 range . did a load out of northern Maine that paid 1.30 a mile but was in town I was in so no dead head ... hauled 1 forklift back from key west for 1.45 other than that everything was at least 2.00 . . I have quite a few agents I do regular stuff for but half cones from load board

that's a van trailer also .... and rates are way up since December . they kinda steady now but should continue to rise . flat bed rates are higher yet
