    I've been looking at dump trucks and I'm beginning to come across a few old Autocars from the 80s era big cam Cummins all that sort of thing.

    My question is how difficult is it to work on the auto car since the hood does not flip?

    My second question is how difficult is it to find parts for these? Where do you find autocar parts?

    The last question is has anyone made an auto car front end flip? Is that possible? The flip front end has to make it easier to work on.

    Parts were pretty generic back in that era. Might have problems finding Autocar specific stuff though since they have been out of production for a long time (ie no dealers). Even parts for my 1980 KW are hard enough to get through the KW dealer.

    That's what I'm wondering about. Things like wiper motors heater Motors heater core, stuff like that

    Wiper motors can be rebuilt, they still do that. Heater motors can be found and so can heater cores.

    It is amazing what it sitting on the shelf of some of these companies that never turn over their old inventory. AND it is equally amazing when you get into these little clique groups who own these trucks what they know about the parts and where they can be found.

    By the way, we have a company that runs Autocars up north of me, I see them when I head into the Detroit area all the time.

    That's good to know. Maybe I need to join a Facebook group or something.

    They certainly were heavy duty trucks.

    But I'm still curious to know how hard they are to work on and if there's a way to make the front end Flip or be more accessible.

    The latter 80's models here had factory tilt hoods. I doubt converting one would be worth the effort.
    You know AutoCar was the heavy duty division of White. The White/GMC and AutoCar in those years had many interchangeable parts. The problem I run into now is the Volvo dealer can't or won't even try to look up parts for me.
    Those butterfly hood beast with a Cummins were pretty tough. Did not normally spend to much time under the hood anyway. When you do it could cause a preacher to cuss at times.

    They were pretty much volvos or should I say white/gmc's in the late 80's with a different grill. So parts aren't hard to come by.

    I had a B model Mack, a International Paystar and a Autocar all with butterfly hoods and all were dump trucks, they are horrible to do routine maintenance on, you either have to lay on the fender or kneel on the fenders.
    If you are looking for a mid 80's or later tandem dump truck buy a Mack, i have had several of them and with the right specs nothing out there is better off road.
