As far as DOT goes how do they look at scaled weights GVWR vs GAWR?

If I look at my personal vehicle, when I run across the scales, my front runs 4,340 lbs and the drive axle runs 2,620lbs. The GVWR is 8800lbs which only gives me 1,840lbs of payload. This is full of diesel, a suitcase, my child in his car seat, my dog, my lady, and myself.

If I look at the drive axle with a GAWR of 6,084lbs - the 2,620lbs, my pin weight on the gooseneck could be 3,464lbs. The most i'd ever need is 3,000lbs loading my trailer at 20% for the pin.... As per DOT, what do they look at as legal and not legal? Do I need to step up to a 1 ton faster than planned?

I heard they do if they look close to their limits. My buddy got pulled because he "looked" overloaded though they found he wasn't. I want to play it on the safe side, you know? They are very very stringent around here, and I drive past the scales well... every day. LOL

They will check your registration for your maximum gross. I had one come out while I was sitting on a scale and ask for mine once.
