Iowa, for one, put a change to the regs for the state that allows for granting of Commercial Drivers License for military experienced truck drivers, and waives the skills testing requirement. They can't be the only state to have done this. All that is needed is proof that one has operated comparable vehicles in the military, i.e. DD214, military issued driver license, etc. And one has to apply for this within 90 days of military service. Paperwork for this is available at all Dept of Motor Vehicles and most trucking companies. I am sure that Hazardous Materials testing and background check requirements would still be a requirement.

    Thanks for your service!

I knew a National Guardsman back in the '90s that had never been in a truck that had a sargeant write him a military license qualification . RI accepted it and just gave him a CDL . We worked for the same paper manufacturer and they hired drivers from job postings within the company . He got a driver's position and didn't even know how to hook up gladhands.
You'll probably hear a bunch of BS here about nobody will hire you without a CDL mill certificate and you"ll have to drive OTR for a starter company before you can get a good job.
None of that is true . You get good jobs in trucking not from what you know but who you know . Get the word out to friends and family . Join the VFW or American Legion and check with your VA agent at the employment office . There is likely a smaller company that will recognize your experience and appreciate your service .

You can get a waiver for the driving test (at least in Louisiana) if you have proof that you were an 88M and you do it within a certain number of days (90 days I think?). My military experience was counted as regular driving experience when I applied for a driving job too. I drove HETs (M911), M915s, M931s, and M818 5 Ton Tractors for 20 years. I started out as a 64C and then it changed to an 88M.

I think here in Texas you can do it but you need a waiver signed by your company co stating you drove a truck equal to a cmv for at least two years and you still have to take the written tests but are exempt from the driving test.
