We have two drop deck steel Transcraft trailers that are 38' long. Loaded all their life. The only cracks that we have found on them are the outside frame of the deck at the bottom portion of the drop. Both trailer have cracked in the same exact spot. Gussets were made and installed there and we haven't had any issues since.

I'd say especially that vintage. Had plenty of time for metal fatigue and years of being used hard.

Ravens are the worst the older they are. Low quality aluminum that gets brittle with age. I do not know about ones since Fontain bought them but the old one were bad news hauling heavy. General frieght the probally would be ok.

Strange, company I worked for had somewhere close to 300 Ravens. Most early 2000s pulled them for several years, then started getting some of the Fontaine branded units. That only lasted a few years, then the Fontains were gone. Never really had any more problems from them than any other trailer.

Pulled this beauty: 2017 Transcraft Eagle II combo until December 2017, bought it brand new in 2016 (a year early), not one issue, never had anything go wrong with it since new. Mind you: I pulled extremely light freight with a 144 inch sleeper truck (one in my avatar) ...I still have the trailer if someone wants it.

Here's me loading my 1st stick of freight (with my old 1996 KW T600)..I didn't have load levelers so this nice fella at the plastic pipe place was nice enough to make one out of some pallets.

Thought about a step. Seems like freight is more limited, and the trailers cost more.
Was trying to keep it below $15K for my first trailer. If I have to pay more than that I may as well finance a trailer that’s near new.
