Is there a way for me to obtain my own Texas apportioned plate without having my own DOT number or general liability insurance? I have the non-trucking liability and physical damage coverage, but don't have or want to get at the moment my own DOT number or authority. Can't you obtain the plate and just inform the state of the carrier who will be responsible for the safety of the vehicle? My current situation is I am leased to a carrier and have the lease to show at the regional office to get the plate, but plan to leave that carrier to go to Landstar, if approved with Landstar. I am just tired of "renting" a plate from a carrier. I would rather shell out the money and have the full year use of my own plate than lose money like I will, if I continue renting the plate from the carrier and end up terminating the lease before the plate is used fully. Thank you in advance for your advices and comments.
FYI, I am currently structured only as a DBA sole proprietor, in the county where I reside. I plan to get an LLC, just not right away.
