I already have insurance on my trucks, so I just called my insurance company and make them an additional insured.
I have to add the rental truck onto my policy with the specific VIN number, then it gets canceled off my policy when I return it

Just wondering, have you actually talked to Ryder or Penske about leasing a truck?

The last time I heard, they won't rent a truck long term but lease and you need some money for that lease.

@freebirdnca nobody in there right mind would.
You need at least 2 years experience so insurance is affordable. 40k miles means nothing.

I would never let some random guy from the internet book his own loads under my MC, no matter how clean his background is.

I wasn't going to burst his bubble but I agree, it is a hard sell to anyone with an authority, especially with questions like these.

I leased truck from Penske when I first started as an O/O. That was back in 2009 when economy was in the toilet, Penske was leasing them pretty cheap so I was able to afford it. Right now I wouldn’t do it , crazy expensive to rent or lease one. Also dealing with their shops and mechanics sucks , most of them are plain lazy and it takes them forever to do simple fix. Also big customers are more important to them then one person operation.

Why not just get your own numbers. Then you have no one but you running everything.

I did it for several years, in both Canada and the US. I found Penske/Ryder to be too expensive, poor service and limited selection of trucks (I needed configured for heavier hauling), so I went with the manufacturers. I started with Idealease (International), but switched to Paclease (Kenworth). Paclease had better trucks and better service (had some out-of-country issues that were solved promptly--moved to the head of the line, no waiting). Paclease's rates were marginally higher, but worth it.

Initially we ran with their plates and authority and just provided additional insurance. Later we ran on our authority as well as leased to another carrier. We primarily provided power only to various carriers, but also as third-party for Landstar. The insurance was pretty straightforward, with the truck owner as named insured.

Because he does not get any skin in the game this way. If anything goes south, he will just give the truck back and move on with life.
