Anybody on this forum know anyone or perhaps yourselves have a radio with SSB that lives in the Durham Region in Ontario, Canada? I'd love to test my range with someone on LSB/USB. I only have 23 channels so I believe 16-LSB is what's supposed to work the best. Also how far can I expect to transmit on SSB?

I have a few SSB radios but I'm far south of you in the U.S. On SSB it depends....during skip when the channel is not crowded, you can talk hundreds of miles away. When skip is not rolling, again it depends, but you can talk anywhere from 10-30 miles, sometimes more.

The thing with SSB rigs is you focus all the power on one side band, thus the name; on AM you have the upper, lower and carrier all mixed into one. Most of your power is wasted on AM as opposed to SSB.

However, not many still run on 16 LSB....most of the sidebanders have migrated to channels 36-40 LSB.

Also keep in mind any channel will work on SSB; channels 36-40 LSB are based on a gentlemens agreement.

    305-Hillbilly Thanks this.

Thanks Turbo. I'm just hoping there is someone out in my neck of the woods that might have the aforementioned SSB radio that I could test with. I'm aware of the move of chatter to 36-40 LSB, guess I'll just have to wait till I pick up a newer 40 ch SSB/AM radio. Got my eye on the Galaxy DX 979, just looking to find a store in the area here that sells one or can find a used one.

If you can locate someone with a SSB radio, explain to them you have a 23 ch rig and ask if they'd like to move to ch 16. Becareful of used Galaxys, they're known for cold solder joints. Nice radios otherwise. If you were closer there's someone on craigslist about an hr of me selling a Uniden Grant for $50....I've been temped to go snatch it but I don't need anymore radios.

Haven't had much luck finding anyone yet, even being so close to the highway doesn't help. Most drivers I pickup only have AM radios. Had a good long chat with a guy last night about radios, man you could of swore he was across the street he was coming in so loud and clear.

I've heard about that with the Galaxy's but I hear they are still a nice radio. Seen one at the truck too here for sale new in the box, $213 +tax... Not cheap.

Yea truck stops tend to rip you off on CB's as they cater to the trucker who's hundreds of miles from home and his radio just blew up. Best bet is to browse Craigslist and look. eBay is chock full of people willing to pay top dollar.

Where was the guy you met that sounded like he was across the street? If he had a beam antenna, it would be of no wonder.

Yeah I noticed that, alot of pricey stuff there. If you've passed through the area you way have heard of the truck stop, The 5th Wheel. Ive been scanning Kijiji (we don't really use Craigslist up here, unless your looking for a rub and tug haha).

He was at the scales about 2-3kms away, he said he had some kind of antenna on his rig, could have swore he said a base antenna or something which I found odd to be on a rig.
