Any Pitt Ohio Driver's?

Give it a try! You're young and will probably like LTL work within a few weeks of getting use to. There's nothing better than getting paid for everything you do. Most guys I know, enjoy working there out East.

 

Read something about them being sued for not having any woman drivers or dock workers, but who knows if its true...

 

You read that on here! The judgment went against them too. A few million $$$$.

 

Pitt Ohio, at last look, was still family owned and profitable. They run a good operation, expect for not hiring women drivers and dock workers. LOL. Take a look at their stats, good OR and thats what counts. Don't know if you know anything about their history but the owners are cousins to the guys who owned PJAX (Pittsburgh Johnstown, Altoona Express) PJAX is owned by ViTran now. Anyway the cousins couldnt get along and divided into the two carriers. Until just a few years ago PJAX was always kind of a "dirty" carrier. Pitt Ohio was always and still is a classy well run carrier. They do one thing that many carriers should do and don't... They cost out their freight, if it's not profitable or won't fit into something that makes them money they do not haul it. They do expect their employees to work so if thats a problem dont go to work for them.

 

I started with them in September as a full time city driver. Got bumped to part time in November, laid off the second week of January and terminated last week because of lack of work. I was at the bottom of a 37 driver roster and was told that a few more drivers that were able to stay longer were also terminated.

You can go to the Pitt Ohio website (I'm not allowed to post a link on this board yet) and click on the career center to search and apply for a job but we were told that all terminals were cutting back. As bad as it is, you may want to hang onto your current job until the economy improves.

That says a lot for the lack of freight when co's like Pitt Ohio are laying off like that. Thanks for the info.

They've gone years without laying off drivers. They typically have a "rolling layoff". When there is not enough city work, drivers would be given a day off, starting at the bottom of the seniority list. Once you have a day off, you are guaranteed to work the other for days. The layoff works it's way up through the seniority list so that everyone works at least 4 days in the slow season. They are still doing that with the remaining drivers but unfortunately for some of us, we picked the wrong year to be the new guys.
In the past, they have allowed drivers and dockworkers to take a voluntary layoff for the winter which would keep a few folks at the bottom working steady but that plan was also scrapped for this year because of the economy. Pitt Ohio did not want to pay for benefits for the ones that weren't working.
