Hi guys,
Any of you guys out trucking out on Christmas day today? I know I was. I didn't see to many trucks out on the road today. I was on special assignment, ran from Cleveland to our warehouse near Pittsburgh with a set of doubles and then hooked on to a volume trailer and ran back to Cleveland to do 3 stops at 3 different stores. So now I've done it all you could say ha-ha! I've done sales-service, transit and volume truck.
First time I pulled doubles ever today and it was a little weird going around corners with them.
Then pulling a big 50' volume trailer first time in a long time I pulled a big trailer like that. I never really realized how unresponsive the big trailers are when you back them, they just go straight back hardly walk anywhere unlike our 28' footers which you constantly have to correct and what ever the big trailers just go right back like nothing.
Anyhow it was fun out on the road today I would much rather be a transit driver or volume truck driver then run routes and hopefully I can get there eventually kind of like my goal and all. It was great actually had a lot of fun at work today, I had my own raging rock concert in the truck down on the Ohio and PA turnpike.
When I got on the highway I put on this tune:
It's right up there with Rush's Test for Echo as far as good trucking songs go.
Yeah Pennsylvania has big swooping hills and all that good stuff, but it all worked out well.
Any One Out Trucking On Christmas Day?

Yep.. left the Carolinas on the 17th for a Seattle /LA/Dallas /Baltimore/NC loop.
Almost out of TX now. 5700 miles down. I'll switchout the BAL late Sun nite and get home Mon eve. THEN... I'll take my holiday.
I usually work most holidays. My kids are grown , no grandchildren yet, wife works as a nurse with a loopy schedule. Usually the traffic is so light it's peaceful for me and others with young us need to be home. I don't mind going.NavigatorWife and Mike2633 Thank this. -
I'm leaving home a day early. I have a new truck waiting for me at the terminal. 2016 Cascadia. Have to move into it and get settled in .You know how long that can take. A few hours at the least. For me anyway. Grab my wagon and head to Wisconsin for a two stopper. Looking forward to going back to work. I need to see a shrink!

537 logged on Christmas Day. That got me to the house at about 3:00 PM. Now I have a few days to relax on the way to California.
I saw several groups of dudes posted up at closed Wal Marts and trucks stops coming across 40. God bless those guys. -
I ran the whole route on my time table nobody around I pulled into the warehouse nobody was there place totally closed up. Walked into the office, saw my paper work sitting on a table. Grabbed my paper work, went out into the yard hooked up to my trailer and took off.
Had keys to all 3 of my stops which were our companies grocery stores. GFS is the only broadline food service distributor to have it's own chain of grocery stores. I got home about 9:30pm eastern standard time really not a bad run at all, I love doing stuff that's not my usual job. If it was my regular job ehh, but when it's transit or volume truck to our stores, yeah I'll take a crack at it.NavigatorWife, Bob Dobalina and jammer910Z Thank this. -
I worked through Thanksgiving and Christmas, and will be staying out til the end of January. Not many folks out here with me in the NW but those who are, are generally pretty good folks to chat with on the CB or around the breakfast bar.
My daughter is away at college and not coming back to Indy til summer (if then) and The Hot Chick (wife) rides with me, so we only go home for appointments, or to hole up for a few days to do the taxes which will be our next home time activity.
I've found that working through the holidays helps free up the work load a little for someone else who wants to go home, and I get to snipe some extra miles. The company appreciates me taking up the slack also. So it's win-win-win. I've done it for years, and the only time it's an issue is if there's a breakdown--then things can get hairy since everything is closed.NavigatorWife, jammer910Z and Mike2633 Thank this. -
That was my thought yesterday when I was out on the road I thought gee you know if I have any breakdown, I'm kind of screwed the shop was closed and I was pretty much only GFS truck out on the road in our division yesterday, well more guys were running later on that night, but I was a whole day ahead of the curve.

Yep, I was. Had a short run Indy to Cincinatti and back. took an empty trailer there and waited for 2 hours to get 4 skids loaded on me. Seemed like no body at the Cincinatti post office knew what was going on.
