Any of you run the big iron off road in the pits or on the large construction projects?

I tried it @ a limestone mine for a few months, It was running a small side plant and you emptied out your bin into an old R model mack tandem and dumped it on the piles all day, then you maintained the plant and cleaned up under the belt lines etc...

    wasnt my cup of tea.

i used to be an equipment yo yo in a florida rock pit so i'd run everything piece of euipment there including the volvo/komatsu 40 yd off road dumps here and there when they were short on drivers....boring work point a to point b and back and forth i hated it me and a couple couple guys would race them around the mine just to stay sane sometimes

the guys that they would hire to drive them were either rookies to construction or just dumber then the rocks they hauled

bottom of the barrel pay as well i think they started them out at min. wage and topped them out at $10.00 just zero skill involved

What's the "big iron"? Are you talking about those HUGE dump trucks that work in the mines? Those trucks are huge! I always wanted to drive one... or just sit behind the wheel and gasp at the view!

I knew an equiptment operator at the local landfill, years ago. His name was Todd. He was my oldest brother's girlfriend's brother. One night, let me drive an earth mover around the landfill after they closed. Ok... I was 16 or17 years old and I didn't REALLY drive the earth mover... I sat in front of Todd while he drove, but it felt like I was driving! It was awesome! I remember my pickup truck looked like a match box toy from the seat of that earth mover! I imagine the mining trucks feel the same!

I've been working construction trucking the past year. Mostly, highway construction and levee work. Not really "mining" in the same sense as your experiences...

Can you post a picture of a big iron truck? Share some of your experiences? I've never met seen a mine trucker (is that an adequate description?) Or read any threads on here about mining. I sure would love to hear some stories about it!

Whoa!!! Haul trucks are A LOT BIGGER than the earth mover i got to ride around the landfill! How much does a haul truck weigh? How much do they weigh loaded? What do they mine with equipment that size? My dad was a coal miner when he was young, but he never talked about equipment that size in the coal mines.
