I have a broker that wants to hire me full time with a 3 car wedge and pick up truck that is rated for 26000 gcvwr. I'm legal to drive the truck trailer combo without a cdl A, have my medical card and the funds to start rolling. He "guarantees" me $2 a mile for hauls over 500 and $3 a mile under 500. I explained to him that I don't have a cdl and he says he can keep me under 26k as he can load me with lighter cars weighing on avg of 3500 lbs curb weight. Under 11,000 lbs of load for 3.

I'm worried about axle weights and how 3 cars split the load between truck and trailer since it seems I will run close to max weight all the time. I'm looking at the take 3 ultra lite decked out with 49 ft of ramps, winch and 7k spread 48' tandems. Not sure how or if the spread helps me at all with distributing the load. Truck+trailer+tools= 14,500 lbs. Leaves me with 11,500 of payload as long as I can spread it right. I want to make sure I am not making a $20,000 mistake buying the trailer and then realizing it's unusable to me.

Any non cdl 3 car haulers out there can tell me your experience with the weigh stations or how the weight is distributed on this type of setup? Anyone have a weigh ticket loaded?

    Disregard this post.
Decided not to go with this job offer as I found a much better one without the overweight risk.

I got my own authority and a cdl. Working for yourself is much better than hauling for a company that only cares about themselves.
Hauling bigger units pays better and dot doesn't bother me as much with a cdl setup.
Start off with loadboards like central and keep good relationships with the brokers.

Cars are getting heavier and keeping under 26k is a huge pain. Cdl trailers are built stronger and seem to last longer.

This post is from 2 years ago. I paid off my truck and trailer in less than a year and just bought a semi I'm converting to a haul and tow.

. Excellent advice. The natural progression to a larger unit. 24k Hotshot got it going on.
