Anybody been through this school and can comment on their training? I've been talking to a recruiter there and she seems to be on the up-and-up, but I would like to hear from someone who has been through their program.
Here's what I know so far: It's a three week course, 160 hours, 16 days, 10-hour day. The cost is $4150. This doesn't include motel (not sure about meals). There is the option to finance. The recruiter said the school places you with a company before they accept you into the school (of course at orientation what the company does with the graduate afterwards is dependent on a lot of things, I'm guessing). The companies that hire out of their school are the typical starter companies/mega carriers.
Also, what questions should I be asking the recruiter before I give over $4k plus to a private outfit like this? Thanks in advance.
Any info on Truck America Training in Shepherdsville, KY?

There are many companies that will hire from a 160 hr. school, besides the mega-carrier starter companies. Don't sell yourself short; you're worth more than poverty wages when you have that CDL; especially if you also have all the endorsements plus a passport and TWIC. Some companies will reimburse you for the tuition; such as Watkins & Shepard in Berea, KY; check the website.
These companies will hire you :
Schneider (tanker division)
Melton Truck Lines
Maverick
Dynamic Transit
Holland Enterprises
TMC
System Transport(download application from website and Fax to them)
CRST will pay for your school if you agree to work for them for 8 months after graduation. They have excellent flatbed training.
Millis has a good reputation with the drivers, but I don't know what you can expect with annual pay.
Check all these websites plus keep looking; put in as many applications as you can. Start the applications the day you start school.
The big question to ask the school is, can I apply anywhere I want to, not just the mega-carriers? You're paying the tuition, so you should be able to choose. It's your money! Your best annual pay will be with flatbed or tanker, but you can do OK with some of those coast-to-coast reefer outfits, but not the typical megas.Last edited: Aug 22, 2013

Be sure they are accredited and never pay for the school out of your pocket. Get the government grant. Do not go to Mr. P's training. They are not a accredited school.
I considered Truck America when I got my CDL, but decided to go to TDI in Sellersburg. I think they are both CDL mills. Get in, get out, get a job and go on the road for 6 weeks training.
Personally, I would choose a trucking company near the house.briarhopper Thanks this. -
Blind Driver TDI called me and I spoke with a recruiter. I started to ask the usual questions and he cut me off saying something along the lines of it wouldn't do any good to tell you anything now let me send you some info in the mail. So I got his info and it doesn't tell me any more than what he said - just a brochure and what I am assuming is a pre-application asking about driving record and references, work history, etc. So I don't know anything like what it costs, how long the course is, who hires out of their school, etc. Too bad because Sellersburg might even be a little closer to me than Shepherdsville but another school (pretty well known) up in Indy said they'd train me to get an Indiana CDL and even though I'm a Kentucky resident I wouldn't have to switch it over? I thought there was something in the laws that said you can't hold two current licenses from two different states? He was new and had to keep putting me on hold to ask his supervisor for the correct answer to my questions. At least he was willing to answer.
I will check into the grant thing but I have used Pell grants in the past and I don't think I qualify any more unless the Feds changed the rules. I'm retired and draw a small pension (which is why I'm looking into driving - I want to pay off my house and my daughter will be getting married someday - I hear that's a pretty expensive proposition lol) but I live pretty simple and do have the cash to pay up front, free and clear so I don't have to be locked into a contract with a company if I find out it's not a good fit for me. I thought maybe the training could be considered a tax write-off on the federal level but perhaps that's a question I should ask in the tax threads.
Choosing a company near the house, that makes sense. Just typing out loud. Thanks. -
You're much better off if you can do it through a Community College. It will cost less and be better instruction, and open a few more doors with small and mid sized companies
