I keep reading about cargo theft everywhere and anywhere nowadays. Few days ago a friend of mine got his truck+trailer+load stolen from an enclosed parking lot. Locked gates, lights in the parking lot and the scums did what they do for living. They broke the lock from the driver side, broke the key ignition bolt and start the truck and left with the truck and loaded trailer.
Now I'm thinking what if was my truck coz it was parked right beside the stolen one. We both have Volvo. He has nothing anti-theft on his truck. I do have a code that I turn on when I stop the engine. I've been told that with that code ON only at the Volvo dealer one can start my engine but I don't know if is true or not. Then I do have a blocker for the brakes (yellow and red buttons). Then I do block my steering wheel with a regular steering wheel lock.
My question for all of u gentlemen is what else should I do as extra anti-theft measures. Please feel free and bring whatever comes in ur mind doesn't matter how hilarious it may be. I worked so hard to be where I am right now and I'm ready to do anything in order to stop my equipment from being damaged and stolen.
I plan my next trip in Oregon to buy from Dieselboss one camera system for my truck. Also I am searching for the best/affordable GPS tracking system. Please tell me what else would u gents do to protect ur property while the equipment is parked and u're not nearby. Respect !

Sounds like you've done a pretty good job. His truck was stolen and yours wasn't. They probably saw the air brake locks and steering wheel lock and then saw that his didn't have it and took his truck. No doubt if he had the locks and you didn't, it would've been YOUR truck that was stolen. Thieves always take the easiest/quickest route. If they want something bad enough they'll take it no matter how much $$ you sink into trying to keep it from happening. But if you can make your truck a pain in the ### to steal, they'll probably move onto something easier.

My theft control is my door locks...most people around here don't screw with stuff. I've left my truck at the truckstop unlocked before and I leave a key in the ignition at all times. Nobody is stupid enough to steel equipment around here as most of the guys where I park know me and I know them and we watch out for each other. I don't park for extended periods of time in other areas so I don't worry much about that. I've had a trailer sitting at the truck stop for almost a month no locks on anything all my dunnage is still there everything's in my tool boxes and nobody's hooked up and stolen my trailer. That's not to say things have not been stolen out of other trucks that aren't usually parked there but for most of us that park most there all the time nobody messes with our equipment...helps that the truck stop workers have me and my dad on speed dial though.
As for theft control I'd say the air valve locks for tractors are the best there's really nothing for trailers to be honest. I can take a kingpin lock off in about 2 minutes and glad hand locks are a waste of $15 theyre as worthless as worthless gets. -
Disable the truck as best you can. Most secured lots in Montreal have exit passes, does yours? Do they have full time security?
Here's some ideas:
- Drain the air down completely (they can still fill it from an outside source)
- Disable the ECM at one or two points (wiring connectors on ecm, pull ECM fuse, etc..)
- Obvious camera system plus a hidden one
- Have stickers "this unit tracked by GPS"
- Obvious GPS tracking (Qualcomm) and hidden one that can alert you if the truck moves
- Remove stick shift air knob
- Remove steering wheel
- Set steer brakes to drag as much as possible
- Glad hand locks
- Leave air tank drain ####s open
- Remove multiple fittings on air tanks
- Park with your steers to one side + remove accessory belt (that would really piss them off)The_Judge Thanks this. -
I'd be pretty stupid to give away my current security measures now wouldn't I?
Most important is don't leave truck running when you pull forward after fueling and walk inside. I see a whole row of trucks begging to be stolen.HorseShoe, driverdriver, Charli Girl and 3 others Thank this. -
I have iron man riding in the passenger seat, mr T or the hulk would also work.

Past alarm system(s).
All the above go NUTS when i walk away from the truck, sometimes too much so if it's a quiet area. I have yet to have anyone try to mess with the truck or load.
When I am home, truck is on my driveway, trailer is either at my local dealership or a local (little known) truck stop with an all but useless kingpin lock on it. When I haul the blade trailer and drop it though, I never bother with a kingpin lock. Instead I turn the steerable wheels on it to one side and walk away with the remote!

Use a heavy chain and lock to chain your tires together, use more than one.
