Has anyone played the video game American Truck Simulator? If so, how would you compare it to the real world experience? Also, do you think an individual with a lot of hours logged in the game would come into trucking with a significant advantage?
I bought the game on Black Friday for $7 and I have been playing it since. I feel like I have a great idea of what to expect now, but I'm curious to hear an actual truckers perspective.

Trucking sims are pretty useful in one respect, learning to back to and hook on to a trailer or dock one. Shifting comes out to 4 gears. Pffth. The cars are too structured. You can only do so much with computing power.
That's my take on it anyhow. It's beautiful for mirror work and backing a semi. Everyone should try it. But its not going to be real world quality for a long time to come. It's not bad mind you... but it's a long way to go.
Another example of gaming not matching real world would be Call of Duty. Bleah. Ive been gaming for I think around 42 years on computers before there was even a internet and probably another 8 years before that in the even older ones that predates computers.Grubby, Lepton1 and Oldironfan Thank this. -
Does it have shippers and receivers that hold you forever, a eld that forces you to only work certain hours, them slugs in cars looking for a payday from a company with deep pockets? That is all fantasy land and when you find real life out on the road, like all of a sudden 90 mph winds knocking you around and then the things that happen out of the blue. It is just a game, real life is scary, you wreck you do not get a do over.

No computer scenario could duplicate what Captain Sully accomplished. I am growing tired of computers in general.

What sully had to do with the GWB in his face and a plane that is coming down one way or another in a place where you really cannot put a plane down... was fantastic. Im extremely happy it worked out.Grubby and SingingWolf Thank this. -
It can be useful to practice backing. Only really backing.
RedBeardedT Thanks this. -
If the trucking simulator was crossed with dark souls, just maybe. (I'll explain if I hafta)
Grubby and SingingWolf Thank this. -
Thanks for the replies ya'll. I realize it will never be a spitting image of the real world. I meant more along the lines of backing, and truck maneuvering in general.
