Where are you trying to be on the tractor tare?
-
i drove a truck with one before and it seemed to be getting rather chewed up in a short period of time, i was running the truck in a lot of off road conditions however. in a otr application they may do better.

That was my point EZ but he never answered the tare question. It's a forbidden area in my book. I would find my pounds elsewhere. I will never compromise safety for profit and that's what this is.......

Oh yeah, drivers, if you need a fifth wheel, buy Holland !!!! They fail closed...huh? What? yep sure do. This gives you a almost zero chance of a disconnect....in fact just the opposite, if it fails, you cannot unhook.....
JTF...trees Thanks this. -
no issues with the locking mechanism but the top of the plate seemed to be wearing rather quickly and had gouges in it from small rocks sticking to the grease and working its way between the 5th wheel and the trailer.

I STRONGLY AGREE ALUMINUM is far to Brittle if cast and far to weak if machined. I can't imagine anybody wanting one. What's next Rubber Bands for Windshield Wipers

Are they willing to also discriminate against heaver drivers and not hire any over 180 lbs so as not to add an additional 100 lbs "needlessly"? Aluminum 5th wheel ... just doesn't seem right to save maybe a 100 lbs. Then, you've got steel and aluminum in contact somewhere. That rarely works out well over the long term.

I doubt they're weaker just likely more maintenance intensive. You'd have to degrease and clean it weekly maybe more if a lot of dropping/hooking was going on. Mine gets that every two or three weeks. Ideally would probably work best greaseless with teflon on the top plate.
Cetane+ Thanks this. -
Maybe you can find some aluminum tires, studs and lug nuts......

Ok a little more info I. Should have posted before. The trucks are going to be kw t680 day cabs we are taking over a private fleet moving scrap metal. It will be a lot of drop and hook. Leasing company I am using told me about them but they do not ave any real world experience with them. Just wondering if they ate worth the hassle and durability
