Anyone find a CB power DC noise filter that works?

I am picking up some alternator whine on the external speaker, even with the noise filters all active.

If anyone finds an effective whine filter, would you please let me know? Sounds like something I could use by my desk at work... :biggrin_25523:

By your avatar I'll assume FL w/Detroit power ??
Re-run your power/ground over to the fuse box and keep your ground as short as possible.
Then ground strap the Alt bracket to the frame(dont run off the bolt on the alt or sparks will fly)

if its a Cat,run the wire off the right side mount bolt straight down to the bracket on the water filter(guessing at the year model, assuming late model)
Takes about 11" of wire and two 3/8 connectors.
Havent done a Cummins so I cant advise what to tie to on the right side of the red motor ?????

I would be interested in what you do come up with if it is a Cummins

This thing is really grounded. I tried running dedicated 8ga wires direct from the battery to the CB chassis. No difference. I think an inline filter is the best solution, short of a capacitor or something right off the alternator, maybe...

Inline filters will do you no good JD. Grounding is the only way you'll solve it. Also what kind of coax are you running and antenna set up that could be affecting it also.

Ground cab to chassis, doors to chassis, etc..... with flat braided ground straps.

    I would agree BUT....

Antenna disconnected. Still hear alternator whine.
Ran a thick ground - no difference.

While I agree with grounding and more grounding it can be easy to make ground loops and then have difference of potentials and new issues.

When I used to install CBs and two-way radios in cars (in a past life) we used to have these awesome choke/coil/cap filters that were $30. They would 100% eliminate any alternator whine (AC actually) but I cannot recall who the manufacturer was and even if I could I am sure they are likely out of business by now...

    :biggrin_2554:

..I can live with it as it only is really noticeable over the external speaker, if I have to.

Ok in that case I would look at installing a capacitor for the alternator. I have never found a choke/filter that actually worked but it sounds like if you could find on like you mentioned then it might work. Good luck either way noise from alternator drives me nuts coming through the cb.

    Hanadarko Thanks this.
