Ever wonder why on this stretch of highway, I-75 from Macon to the Florida state line there are so many exits with no large towns to justify them?
And you can see the remnants of gas stations, restaurants, tourist traps, truck stops, like the one above, littered along every exit?

You can thank this politician, Herman Talmadge, of the Talmadge political dynasty that ruled Georgia for multiple generations.

I have had relatives in Georgia who were involved with politics. The story goes:

When the interstate highway act of 1956 was passed (while he was a senator), he influenced the route of I-75, and the placement of the exits.
He bought farmland at those locations before this information was released to the public, and sold the now much more valuable land to commercial interests, gas stations, truck stops, etc.
He was later caught for other financial improprieties, and lost an election because of it.

 

This used to be a regular stop in the mid 70s running to Florida food was decent and cheap full service fueling and a 4 cent fuel rebate.

 

The restaurant was questionable, the bathrooms were a little scary, but they always had parking no matter what time of night you pulled in.

 

I remember this anonymous argument they got into because of their restrooms more than anything else.
