I am thinking about putting Michelin XZE2 all position tires on my drive axles. I pull a Flat bed. I live in Michigan, on road, no off roading. Some barn yard stuff because I haul a little hay and straw, mostly lumber. I have always wanted to try this but it is a $5,000 test. I use these tires on my trailer (spread axle) and I really like them. I am thinking I could always have pretty fresh tires on my drives by putting the partially wore tires that are on my drive axles and put them back on my trailer as they wear out.
My concern is traction and how will they wear compare to lugged drive tires.
Has anyone tried this? Doesn't have to be the same brand tires or rotating back to the trailer, just curious about straight tread tires for drives.

I run Yokohama ry083a and had great experience with them. Tread is not as deep as lugs but hold well on rain and snow. They will run quieter and cooler than the lugs and I imagine less drag on pavement may or may not help fuel. Some people like the lugs but I don't just my personal preference. I have one truck left with lugs that were on it when I bought it, but just as soon as they wear out I will be swapping.

My program is kinda like that.
Fresh all positions start on the front or drives. Then get put on trailer. After their at 4-5/32s they get retreaded with open shoulder lugs(bandag bda-w) remounted on steel wheels for winter use only. I only retread my casings once. Get 3 winters out of them and turn them in for casing credit.
You get the best of both worlds. But it is a large investment in time and parts.....
I don't use Michelins tho (lowly goodyear rsa149). And they are horrendous in the snow.Last edited: Apr 4, 2015

I did buy that tire for my steering and was told buy my new tire supplier that all position still not good for steering but I would not spend what I paid for two tires even if they are Michellin, I paid $1200.00 for two. I could get another tire for $325.00 each and still last me as long as this Michellin as tires don't last me long due to how hard I run. If you have the money to spend, go for it. Good tires though.

I have run the XZE2 for drive tires, they work well, tire life is a little short. I have run them up in the NW. The difference between putting chains on the XZE2 and a set of closed shoulder drive tire is about 25 feet.

I think the straight tread design will be just fine for your needs. Lugs do cost a little in fuel mileage. I have no actual numbers, just articles I have read.
Don't need them unless you run off road. Good program you have thought out for your tire rotation. Good luck
