Im in S Texas now too. Alaska is not for everyone. For me, I love it there but my wife wanted a change for the kids. Had the slope been booming like here I would stay there. Is not all dead there, just not booming.
Other areas of Alaska are happening for truck drivers though, especially during summer months.

If you're really interested in that kind of work, especially as a new guy, I'd think you would do best to move to Alaska, then apply. I understand that it's hard for lower-48'ers to get jobs, especially entry-level, from out of state. Not impossible, but being a resident of Alaska would be a plus, as far as your resume goes. I'm sure they get tons of people who THINK it sounds fun, but a few 12 hour days at -40 sends lots of people packing for home...
As far as driving, I'd suggest getting some experience in the lower 48 first, especially some winter driving through Colorado, Wyoming, etc. And keep in mind- Alaska is HUGE... but they really don't have much as far as roads. That pretty much means Anchorage, Fairbanks, and the Haul Road to Prudhoe Bay. Again, experience would be a plus, not only in actually getting those jobs, but most importantly, keeping you safe.
Good luck, though. I hope I didn't come across as discouraging. It is definitely do-able, just not easy. Motivation is key...
One more thing, it's funny how much peoples notions differMe, I'd much rather be freezing in Alaska, as opposed to south Texas. To each his own...
Good luck!Wymon Thanks this. -

The main draw for working the north slope for me is the rotation schedule. 2 on/2 off, room and food provided during your hitch, and the pay is good. You can live anywhere you want, but you pay your flight to Anchorage. Did it for 11 years from Miami FL, but rode a desk that whole time. You spend 2 days traveling each hitch but then you have 12 days left for whatever you want.
Is it like that anywhere else in the US/Canada oil patch? -
