Ok so has it ever happened to you guys that the air dryer is stuck purging open? I thought my airlines froze. So as an emergency I poured a bottle of rubbing alcohol into the lines from the compressor to the dryer. It just spilled it out the purge valve. Al’s free much trying just to not be stuck. I grabbed a 10mm socket and tightened it until it stop purging. It’s running fine now. But it’s that a sign to get a new dryer? Or was this dryer just “loose” from factory? I bought it new like a year ago.

NEVER put alcohol into an air system in front of the dryer. It will wreck the desiccant in the dryer cartridge.

In my experience its either been the purge valve is gummed up or the governor has been bypassing.

At this point you should change the dryer cartridge (should probably be changing it every year or 2 anyways). I would check the purge valve to see if its sticky. Some dryer manufacturers have that valve available as a kit.

Update: the alcohol didn’t do squat. It just dumped it out the purge valve on the floor like an AA sponsor to the sponsee trying to hide it.

The compressor stopped making pressure, took the governor line out and it spitted out all the alcohol and it started building pressure again.

limping like this until I can make it home tomorrow.

Sometimes you can put the palm of your hand on the purge valve and block the air coming out and it will loosen the purge valve and it will start working again. If not you have to decide on a new dryer or just a purge valve replacement.

As a temporary measure I have pulled the valve and greased the o rings. As temporary as that should have been, I’m not sure if or when it got replaced. I know it worked well for at least three months.

Sounds like your drier is full of cr*p and the purge valve is taking the hit.....get a new desiccant cartridge, remove the old one, clean out the drier housing and you'll probably be ok unless the purge valve seals are just done due to the contamination.

Worse case - new dryer - best case cartridge and purge valve kit.
