I am going to replace my air desiccant filter today. Im not sure when it was last changed. The dealer tried to talk me into a $70 rebuild kit for the valve, but I told her it functions fine. I even see a good amount of pssst with water when it blows..at least the 1st few times.
Any caveats changing this filter or anything I should look at?
The valve itself is clean and the air compressor charges the system up fairly quickly, but the primary air tank always has some fair amount of white crap when I empty it.
I am guessing changing this filter requires the system to be emptied and then a thin layer of motor oil on the gasket...

I don't know about rebuilds,...
However when I was running my truck it was only a few dollars more to change the whole dryer as opposed to a rebuild,...And the rebuild required more shop time,...It was close enough for me to put the new one on,..
The new dryer came with a warranty,.....And the shop honored that with a free to me road call that winter when the heating element went out and the system froze up,... -
Is there anything special about changing these out that I should know about, (other than the system needs to be at Zero pressure? Is there any thing about these that poses a danger when working on them?

a rebuilt ad-9 air dryer will cost approx $175.00

Rebuilding an air dryer is pretty easy. The only specialty tool you need is a pair of snap ring pliers.
-
For the time, just replace it. It has to come off anyway. They are easy to change.

AD9 Dessicant cartridge is an easy change.
Drain the system.
Remove the 8 or 10 bolts that bolt the big cover to the base.
Thread off the old cartridge.(Propobly need a big strap/chain wrench for this)
The new cartridge should come with 2 new o-rings and some lube.(if no lube use oil)
Install new o-ring, then thread on the new drier.
Install new o-ring for the cover, then install cover.
Start the truck and check for proper operation and also any air leaks.
Hope this helps and good luck! -
AD9 dryer replacement even easier;
Drain system
Remove dryer
Install new dryer
Start truck and check for leaks.
Done
