Wondering if I need a new air compressor. When sitting at an idle my truck will not build up any pressure at all. I have to bump the idle up to 1,500 rpms and it takes a while.

This next problem was strange until my mechanic figured it out. I had a hole in my trailer air tank so I was losing pressure all the time. If I was on flat ground doing 65 it would not build any pressure at all until I hit a hill and the truck started to hump it up the hill. This was confusing to me and until my mechanic explained it to me. I had no idea the compressor got it's air from the boost. So, the problem is that the truck won't build any pressure unless there is boost. I could be totally out of air going up a hill and when that boost kicks in that needle goes at Mach 10 and builds up pressure in seconds.

Many engines have the compressor inlet coming from the intake manifold. So under boost, the compressor gets boost pressure at the inlet. With denser air at the inlet, the compressor can fill the tanks faster.

1st you should check for air leaks. You wont see gauge pressure drop if the leaks are on the supply side. Check that air is not coming out of the dryer purge valve when it's trying to charge. Check the compressor unloader(s). Any oil in the wet tank?

You can check if your compressor is not worn. Build air and look dash gauge how fast its building. It should build in 40 seconds Between 85-100psi.
But first thing check air leaks(air lines, fittings, dryer valve) second disconnect air compressor air outlet, start engine if its not building air your unloader valve bad.

    Where is the unloader valve?
