I have been having issues with my air system on my Volvo 780, I stopped by the Petro, and had the head mechanic look at it and said it could be a couple of things,
1. Air compressor could be on its way out.
2. The governor might need to be replaced.
3. some type of blockage in the system.
But they didnt know and would take it to a VOLVO dealer to be looked at.
I am wondering where is the governor located?
and is it easy to replace the air compressor or should I take it to a shop?
The issue I am having is failing to hold air pressure in the air tanks, when I come off the highway it falls to just above the LAW and sometimes will give me a buzzer, but traveling at highway speed pulling a trailer up hill it will build to governor cut off. when not loaded or going down hill it will be about 85-95 psi.
Any ideas?
and if I need to replace the air compressor or the governor is it difficult to replace them?

Block your wheels, build air pressure to cutoff, shutdown the engine, release parking brakes and locate your air leak. Quite possibly a park chamber (maxi) leaking.

with the hood up standing at the drivers side front wheel, the air govenor is mounted to your right at the leading front edge of the firewall. seen the unloaders inside the compressor sticking alot. with the engine running and the compressor intake removed you can spray some penetrating oil into the compressor to free up the unloader valve. you need to spray about 1/4 of the can but not all at once make sure the compressor cycles a few times.

Does it hold air pressure when parked?
Ive never replaced a compressor so I would know the cost but a goveners ate cheap and easy -
If you have an EGR Cummins you could have a massive air leak from the turbo actuator solenoid or the air piping to the turbo, or the turbo actuator itself. This solenoid is only energized when the engine is actually running, so leaks can be hard to find. This type of leak will not occur with the key off. If your system holds air with the key off this may be the culprit.

What Heavyd said, I had the same problem, thought it was the regulator/sensor /compressor, and it was the turbo actuator dumping air like crazy. It will not leak with the truck off to hear it, and when the engine is running and the turbo actuator is not activated, you won't hear the leak then either. But when it is leaking, you will not be able to build pressure.

sorry I didnt get any updates alerting me i had post,
I had replaced the air turbo it was leaking like crazy and at the same time replaced the air dryer cartridge.
It will hold pressure just above LAW when the truck running, with it reved up to max it will only pressurize to 80-85 psi.
it is not the Maxi checked all the air and had a another driver help me listen for air leaks when I was running the truck.
I have a Cummins ISX 450 -
With air pressure built as high as you can get it, turn ignition key to run with engine off, check for air leak at fan hub.
Also closely check condition of main air line off of air compressor to 1st air tank and the connections. -
