There's a lot to be said about age, good and bad. However, insurance companies like statistics and operate their business as such. Statistically speaking, people past age 60 get ailments and health problems more than people under 60. Airline pilots are done and put out to pasteur at age 60, because, statistically, they are in that un-desirable age group that gets sick, sometimes seriously, serious enough to be hospitalized or die. I would prefer the pilot flying the airplane I'm in to be pretty healthy, 45-50 works good for me, NOT over 60 and possibly having a heart attack behind the controls. Besides, aren't there enough younger guys getting into the business that the older guys can get out ?
So, in regards to trucking, 60 is still acceptable, even 65, or 70 or older, if you can pass a physical, right ? Now, mind you, I'm 68 and haven't driven a truck since April '08, because I re-tired and I'm done with working, even though I could climb aboard any truck today and drive it to the east coast and back. I mean, 32 years of doing it, it's in my blood ..FOREVER. But, I gotta' tell ya', I would not be a good fit driving for any company, because, while I could "get-er-done" it would be my way, to hell-o with any regulations/requirements that companies/police agencies have.
To finish this rant, if I was a truck company owner, I would prefer my drivers to be under 65. I think over 65 you start losing your alertness and health dwindles somewhat. I know I'm slowing down a little mentally and physically. I still do everything I've always done, but, at a slightly slower speed.

You don't hear us old guys asking what type of drug test does this company do and so on.
I feel my body getting older but I feel my mind is as strong as ever, knock on wood.
And remember when you are flying commercial if the pilot has a heart attack there is always a co-pilot. No problem
i am hoping to drive a truck for a while as it is something I always wanted to do but spent most of my time in aviation which I enjoy also but getting a little burnt out and want to move back to the USA.
Hope you are enjoying your retirement !Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
As one who had to deal with age discrimination a couple times, I found that trucking is one of the very few professions that it doesn't really matter how old you are.
I've been told outright that I was either too old (meaning needing insurance) or too young (meaning not collecting social security) when I applied for a bunch of jobs (fast food, technical work, etc. ...). I had one fast food manager explain to me why the company won't hire a person like me, I could need insurance which I didn't.
So for those who are worried, don't, this industry will take a 73 year old women who needs a cane to get around, they will take anyone. (by the way she is driving a 2012 Cascadia)dennisroc Thanks this. -
By all means, drive if you want to and are physically in good shape. Us older guys do have something over the younger guys, that is experience, not necessarily in the job, but in life's experiences. Since we've "been there, done that", we make better decisions. But, you know, at some point, our minds start to stop progressing and we have to question, am I still in the game, so to speak. (to do the job well). Yes we can do the job, but can we do the job well ? I can run in a 26 mi marathon, but let's be honest, I won't finish anywhere near first place, right ? That's because a much younger guy is more capable of finishing in first place.
The Catholic church has no problem with electing a Pope in his 70's/80's. In the U.S. a guy running for President OVER 70 will be chewed up by the press because he might keel over. The Govt says working people should stop working around mid 60's, right ? The point I'm trying to make is, in this day and age, 70 ish is that magical time society wants us to hit the rocking chair. Yes, there's exceptions. Warren Buffet can continue on because he owns the company ! At some point Grandpa will turn over the farm to his Son, because, he knows it's time to call it quits and get on down to W/M and become a greeter (for 4 hours a day).
I knew a guy pushing 100 still driving a car, but when he messed up, he messed up bad. I could see it coming from about age 90. Scrapes on his car, ####-a-meme parking, forgetting to turn off his lights, driving 20 mph in a 35 zone .clearly not really alert enough to drive, but in the eyes of DMV, he was OK. -
63 here and sharp as Anne Coulter's nose. Graduated from trucking school last year, worked for 2 companies so far. Have been offered job offers from about 20 companies in the past year....three of them were before I left trucking school. Truckers with a year or two under their abdominal restraints find job hunting easy in most parts of the US. The BLS says it's going to get even easier. You can already see the majors upping the starting salaries to grab the newbies.
Don't be deterred if you're a grandma or grandpa. Especially if you have a good MVR, fair health, no criminal record, and all those extra ratings--hazmat, doubles/triples, tanker...etc. which are easy to get. Pay the extra $10 bucks or so to get an enhanced CDL so you can go into Canada and Mexico without a passport. A Twic card takes about 4 weeks to get but will not only get you into the ports but will be one more goody on your resume. (caching! another $100 or so). Learn what a targeted resume is.....super important these days.
Good luck to you all !born&raisedintheusa, Chinatown and dennisroc Thank this. -
I have hired 2 drivers over 70 in the last few months. They are great! I have also had to turn some down after they failed wellness tests. But I don't care how old you are, if you can get through the physical, and the wellness test, you are solid with me!

60 in truckin years is 273 years in a normal world!

Well I know this is an old post, but I have been applying to companies that offer paid training. They start my application and then at the last minute call and tell me that they're not hiring in my area.
I'm 65, soon to be 66. In great health and probably give many 20 year olds a run for their money. I have several years of experience of driving over the road but let my license expire about 10 years ago.
I answer an add that states that they're hiring and training in my area. I fill out an application and talk with a recruiter and everything is moving forward... then at the last minute the phone rings... "we're not hiring in your area even though the add is still up and running.
I give them everything they're looking for, my records are clean and can pass drugs tests and physicals. One company said that if I can't provide a high school diploma then they can't move forward on my app. I graduated over 45 years ago and have been in the military.
Some recruiters just drop the ball and won't return my calls after spending time with the recruiter moving forward... I would say that there is age discrimination but instead of saying you're too old, it's some other excuse.Lite bug Thanks this. -
What company did all this happen with?
God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!
The absolute sheer driving force of our national economy - without truck drivers, our entire national economy would come to an absolute standstill - if not outright be dead.
Over the mountains, through the woods, into the valleys, coast to coast, from sea to shining sea - truck drivers can and do go anywhere and everywhere, every day, every night, all year round.Last edited: Apr 8, 2022

age discrimination is illegal, but instead of turning you down for the job, they say not hiring. This is coming from a 30 yr old, probably.
born&raisedintheusa and REO6205 Thank this.
