What do you guys think? I have never replaced my AC/alternator side belt or tensioner and it's gone over 800k. Volvo wants about $400.

I have replaced the water pump side (idler, tensioner, fan belt).

Should I just go with Volvo on these or do the Gates/Dayco ones I'm seeing online hold up?

    This is a D13 in a 2015 VNL

I’ve had good luck with gates but if factory parts went 800 k I’d consider them

alt/ac side has gone 800k. water pump side (tensioner and idler) went about 600k.

Where do you get your Gates?

Don't own a Volvo motor, but I used Dayco tensioners and they work well

Hell, the factory tensioner on my ISX is made by Dayco. Unless International sold me an aftermarket one.

@86scotty , Gates and Dayco belts have a strong reputation. I'm not going to say they're any better or worse than factory, but they aren't trash by any means. Quality stuff.

Thanks, yes, I know both and have used them for my personal stuff for years but didn't know if they held up to commercial abuse. Mine may be made by one of them, who knows.

Definitely worth asking around here though before I give Volvo $400 for a tensioner.

@Goodysnap mentioned something a while back, about an issue he had with aftermarket belts. I forget what Truck/ engine it was. Maybe he’ll show up.

Im a big proponent of using OEM parts but sometimes the price just is not justifiable or its made by someone else that you can source anyways.

There are usually small differences between the 2 that may affect things but shop around a bit......when i worked as a tech for VW an aftermarket Gates timing belt was 4X the price of an OEM belt so perhaps in this case the parts could be the same price just added up differently.

Update, I trust Dayco and Gates parts on my personal stuff so I got a Gates on Ebay from a truck parts only seller for $69. I pulled the $420 Volvo one off the truck to replace and guess what's stamped on it? DAYCO!

I just chose Gates because it was the absolute cheapest and I know the quality is good. The Dayco just like the one that came off the truck can be had for around $100 online, or you can pay Volvo $420 for the exact same part.

She's nice and quiet again now.....and I'll never buy another belt drive component from a dealer.
