I put a can of brake cleaner in the side box in case I got into a greasy job on the road.

Yesterday I shoved my steel toolbox back in the side compartment and punched a hole right through the thin steel can.

It scared me at first, sounded like I broke an air fitting but after realizing my face got sprayed with it I knew what I just did.

Lucky I had my sunglasses on. That stuff puddled on the plastic liner and it started to liquify the plastic so I had to quick empty out the compartment and grab the roll of paper towels and soak up as much as I could real quick.

All's well now. Just had some semi-liquid plastic dry on my hands so I had to scrub extra hard in the shower.

Great to hear you made it with no injury...
During winter months I carry a can of starting fluid in the side box. Like you said, with the tin foil metal, had hole wear into side of can, from rubbing on whatever. I got out of truck and could smell starting fluid. Was only a tiny leak starting, but ...:biggrin_25521:

We had a ton of plastic welding rod boxes laying around, some fit a spray can perfectly (lots of different sizes). All our trucks have a spray can of penetrating oil to free up ratchets. 1 can and about 1/2 dozen rags plug the end (which they use at the same time) before we snap the cap on. Our penetrating oil didn't melt anything, but made a mess when a can leaked. Stop by a welding shop and ask if they can save you a couple boxes that new rods come in, most just throw them away. It protects the can, and if it does leak, it limits the mess. Most drivers asked for more of them to put other stuff in

We also welded in 2 brackets in the side box that a bar slides into. This holds 1 gallon jugs upright in the back of the box. 2 gallons of oil and 2 gallons of anti-freeze.

I take a windshield washer fluid jug and cut the top off then store the WD40, hub oil and whatever else in it. keeps the from tipping and rolling around.

I also wear safety glasses around the truck at all times.

    Glad you weren't hurt.

I like the welding rod container idea. I did not know that different sizes are available. I take about 4in. off the top of a 5 gal. pail using a cordless circular saw. That way they fit thru the sidebox door without a lot of tilting. The only drawback to me is that round containers do not use space efficiently.

www.surpluscenter.com usually has some ammo boxes for pretty cheap too, they work well for a lot of things.

Had a bottle of Howes rupture once. It took many cleanings to even get into the truck.
