I’ve been in trucking for 20 years now and have always worked for someone else. Lately I’ve been seriously considering buying my own truck and trying it out. Is there money to be made out there for someone willing to hustle? Is it worth the headache? Thanks
Advice on finally becoming an owner operator

If you're tired of the idiots....then maybe go where there are fewer idiots?
With that said--what endorsements (if any) do you have (e.g., hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, TWIC)?
Are you willing to pull more specialized forms of freight (hazmat, etc)?

I have all the endorsements and my TWIC card. I’m fine with hauling hazmat and pulling a tanker. Don’t care to pull doubles and triples.

If my "read" on you is correct, what you need/want is:
- fewer idiots (no idiots = another planet
)
- steady, consistent freight that is at least relatively recession-resistant
The following suggestions assume you have not already tried/checked them out, yourself.....
If you are comfortable pulling hazmat & tanker....and have nothing really to keep you in a certain specific area....then of course....that opens up A LOOOOTTT of doors for you.
The following carriers hire owner/ops....and offer steady freight.....with lots of clean, relatively easy work (once you get the hang of it)....& have interesting customers:
- LGT Transport
- Genox
- Keenan Advantage Group (their "Merchant Gas" division)
- US Cryo Carriers
Note: the company driver side of Genox is called "Genox West".
Not sure what the current rates are for that kind of work; different companies of course will offer different rates/terms & conditions.
Anyhooooo....you might check 'em out.

Probably learn a lot about being an 0/0 from these two websites:

There is no shortage of idiots, you just get to work with different one’s

Depends what your goal is of wanting to become an o/o. #1 has to be earn more per unit of work. If you can't manage that and want to drive a different segment of the industry or area of the country or maybe you want to drive a hood or whatever it is then find the company that offers what you are looking for. So I would say, figure out your goal. Do you want to be a fleet owner? What size? Do you want to own more trucks or have owner operators? Do you want to drive something cool and never hire anyone? Go where you want, when you want? Do you want to be signed on to a company? What will that company do for you, and who will be responsible for what? (finding loads, billing, all fuel taxes, road taxes, regulatory stuff to maintain). Figure out what your goal is then you may get more tailored advice.
