Got my license and deciding between swift or prime. Id like to do local/regional where if I have to be gone a few days fine and home more often great or else it looks like I may have to go OTR so I must decide swift or prime. Jim Palmer/Wil-trans looks decent for OTR too. I was advised to just get miles somewhere and find greener pastures later. Wouldn't jumping ship too much hurt too? I would think so. I personally don't want to be gone too long I have a wife and am needed at home so long term dispatch kinda stinks.any ideas? Thanks guys!
Advice on carriers, Swift or Prime for local/regional?

Keep shopping around; Chicago is loaded with jobs for new cdl grads.
Food service pays really well and can be home sometimes every day or a few times during the week. One new driver posted he makes $70K with McLane Foodservice; he lives just north of you on the Wisconsin/Illinois line. Food service companies usually advertise you need 12 mos experience, so don't go by that, it's not true; they hire new cdl grads, but you have to apply for "driver helper" or "driver associate" to get started.

Why are you stuck on these 2 companies?
Either of these 2 will keep you out for months at a time, Did you attend a school with a min of 160hrs of training?
You want local? Its here plenty of decent local jobs
You want regional plenty of those alsoTrucker0923 and Chinatown Thank this. -
FFE (Frozen Food Express) has a terminal in Chicago and hires new cdl grads. A good benefit with FFE is you have a safe place to park the truck while on home time, since they have a terminal right there.
XPO Logistics - has good choices including expedited freight, local, regional.
Salem Carriers - has "Driver Apprenticeship Program" for new cdl grads. There's probably a warehouse near you which means you'd be home often to reload.
West Side Transport - has guaranteed minimum weekly pay; you can earn more, but not less. The guarantee is something like $1000.00 weekly. They also have some regular routes or you can stay out longer.
Tyson Foods - drivers make good paychecks.drivingfool and Trucker0923 Thank this. -
I did 200 hours with a school. I do have 1 minor moving violation ticket almost 3 years old and 1 felony count back in 2006. My schools job placement counselor gave me limited options.I was advised to go OTR and gain some rep. -

Ignore the job placement counselor; they always push 4 or 5 mega carriers; it's makes their job easier. Put some more apps. in at other places; do the online apps then follow with a phone call and say "I'm checking on my job application." This way, they can pull up your job application on the computer screen while they're talking to you and get right down to business.
