I currently haul cars with a 2018 dodge 3500 and 3 car Kaufman flatbed trailer and I never go over weight and I dont have a class A cdl

I used to haul 3 cars with a 2005 Dodge and a kaufman. I was almost always overweight, unless I was lucky enough to fine 3 small cars. The point is, from a DOT standpoint, with your 2018 3500 and your kaufman 3 car what is your Gross Combined Weight Rating of truck and trailer? Answer = definitely over 26,000 unless you have de-rated your trailer. You may very well be able to stay under 26000 in ACTUAL weight but DOT will bust yo ##* if your GCWR is over 26000 and you are operating without a Class A. Been there

Non cdl car hauling is really going to hold you back. Constantly looking for 3 small cars which don't always pay well is tiring. You will deadhead a lot trying to piece together a light enough load to stay under 26k. Going non cdl was my initial plan until I bought my truck and weighed it ready to work. After a quick calculation I ran to get my cdl before my trailer was ready for pickup.
I have a 19' 3500 and a 3 car wedge. Even with light cars I am past 26k most of the time. I can't piece together a $2 a mile load unless I throw on at least one pick up truck or van and am regularly around 33,000 lbs total. I have a heavy trailer and truck+trailer weigh 18k lbs empty.
A light car is around 3500 lbs but most light cars I come by are more like 4k a piece. 3 light cars is (3500x3) 10,500 lbs. You need your truck and trailer to weigh 15,000 or less. My cab and chassis, with an upfit, 74 gallons of fuel all tools and myself is about 9500 lbs. A regular pickup with stock fuel tank is maybe 8500 wet. The lightest wedge trailers are Take3 and they are about 7,000 lbs. That puts you at 15,500 lbs.
The best non cdl setup in my opinion is a single axle one ton and a 2 car trailer. You can stay short and almost never worry about being over weight. -

So if you take my truck for example (8,1k) + that trailer it would be combined weight of 13,200. The trailer will be rated at 14k lbs and around 12k load capacity. For the record though that trailer is pretty expensive.. It's like $15k...
but I agree it would be harder to find 3 car to fit on it weight wise than just running CDL.. Also even with a 2 car like my set up I tend to have issues with trying to run a large truck and a small car. Example as a non-CDL set up I can't even carry a 1-ton truck and fit a mid sized car in most cases because the truck will be at least 8-9k lbs..
edit listed wrong weight on my truck..
Now if you just ran a standard cab and chassis it might be workable but you'd have to stay local or do hotels every night.
hey btw do you recall what your plates cost you here in FL?Last edited: Apr 14, 2020
