This seems like the best forum for this. I'm getting a CDL and was thinking of getting into the food delivery section of the industry. What advice can you provide for a newbie.

It is a hands on job. In the trailer unloading and dealing with tight areas at the stores, restaurants. Mayby get CDL and then train a bit with a driver to see if it works for you.

There are also shuttle positions. The yard I used to park at had a food service company leasing yard space with two tractors with shorter refrigerated trailers. In the evening a third driver would come in, grab one of the tractors and double up the trailers and off he went to the distribution center (a few hours away).

Early the next morning, he was back with two freshly loaded trailers, would break the doubles, and the two delivery guys would arrive while he was there and hook-up for making deliveries. They'd be done early afternoon. Rinse, repeat.
Apparently, all three were making good money.

Where are you located? That will play a role in what company you may want to go with.

As far as getting hired with a CDL A, Sygma and Core-mark are 2 companies that will hire with No experience.

Sysco is 1 year, and US Foods is 3 months experience required. But it can be less depending on how badly the location needs drivers.

Pay depends on the company and changes even within the company from one location to another. But it's either hourly or component pay.

You will be starting very early in the morning to deliver food products to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, bars etc.

The thing to consider about Core Mark is they deliver cigarettes and tobacco among othet things that can be purchased in a convienience store. There is a process to how the cigs and tobacco are checked in. It takes a few extra minutes to do this.

You may also consider delivering beer or soda. But you have to stock and rotate product....i don't recommend going that route. You'll make more money in foodservice.

With foodservice just remember that it’s not a race. Focus on doing things correctly and you will get quicker and more efficient as you go.

Great advice. There's definitely a learning curve. Everything you do is somewhat akward.. Just takes repeating the steps over and over again.

I've worked for Sysco for a long time. I would steer you away from Sysco just from a corporate standpoint They will run you through the ringer particularly when you are new. They preach safety constantly but that is just to cover them when you you get hurt or get in an accident. I made a pickup at the US Foods house in our area last week and I am always amazed how better organized the whole place is compared to Sysco. Alot calmer and easier going atmosphere Drivers I've talked to seem happier, too. If you are set on going into food service ( which is a whole other discussion) I'd look into them first

Where are you located? Gordon Food Service takes drivers with zero experiences.
