    Hi all,

appreciate the title might invoke some emotions given Humboldt and other instances of arrogant immigrants causing tragedy and devastation but please hear me out.

been driving trucks in the UK since last summer and love it. Big thing though, is I don’t love the UK. I’ve always had ambitions to go to Canada and try to get PR. Figured I’d be much better getting a year + experience here before I went out.

I appreciate that Canada has a huge cost of living crisis, shortage of housing and a lot of other issues, sadly so does the UK. Just looking for general advice for if I do get over (2 year temp visa waiting in the wings).

I’m the right side of 30, no kids and no attachments, currently work hauling grain and gravel in a tramping job (UK equivalent of OTR) and I actually quite like it and don’t mind sleeping in the truck. There isn’t much in the way of services/truck stops in the areas I operate so used to sleeping in areas without toilets or amenities etc.

The likes of Toronto or Vancouver don’t really appeal to me, prefer more rural surroundings. Had eyed Saskatchewan, Alberta as first picks but would be grateful to get a start in any province.

im prepared for some backlash as I know given Trudeaus policy of letting in millions of immigrants and crashing the economy will have pissed a lot of people of but please understand I’d be a respectful immigrant. Not some lazy #### who thinks Canada owes him anything or that driving trucks is easy or that it’s acceptable to watch movies on your phone as you drive down the highway. I take my job seriously and have the basics in respect in decency, which from what I understand isn’t the case for a lot of new immigrants.

    thanks in advance.

Toronto and Vancouver are #### holes anyways. You'd have to have brain damage to want to spend half a mill on a tiny ### 1 bedroom apartment when half a mill will literally buy you a 3 or 4 bedroom house on land out in the rural areas.

that’s another factor man. Just think if you pay that you’d have to really, really want to live in a big city. I don’t.

i prefer the charm of smaller communities and feeling like you’re a part of said community rather than just some anonymous number in a sea of mostly pissed off/miserable people.

Depends on your lifestyle. I have no problem living in Toronto.

I'm born and raised in Toronto, ON. My family moved out 3 years ago closer to London, ON. Toronto turned in to a crap hole around the time the Prime Minister took over. The damage is done already and never be fixed. Very unfortunate that common sense with Canada's current administration doesn't exist. Tariffs are going to hurt Ontario more then the other Provinces especially in the Freight Market because Ontario is the backbone of the country. We need to hope that it's less tariffs if any at all. Too much trucks in the GTA and can be seen whereever you go. Plus these newer immigrant drivers are racing on highway 11/17 in Northern ontario doing 120km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone. Then this happens.

I saw the trucks smashed yesterday when driving through and decided to avoid this lane because it's not worth it. Too much new Canadian reckless drivers who haven't the physical coordination driving wearing flipflop as safety shoes doesn't cut it.

Exactly why i wouldn’t blame posters for not replying or being pissed off in what they say.

stuff like that is just inconceivable. You can’t teach that level of arrogance and stupidity out of someone sadly.

I have a relative living there that literally rents just a bed and has to share the apartment with 3 others. You can pretty much rent an entire house in the prairie provinces for what his share of the rent is.

    It boggles my mind.

You’re better off starting in Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta. Cost of living is a little easier, more options. Cross Canada freight is tight now… more drivers than freight, wages are down. I’d look at going cross border. Lots of runs out of Winnipeg to Florida, California, etc.

Pretty much this, if you come here, you need to be able to run the lower 48 in the US. There is almost no Canada only freight, and what freight their is sucks. The Canada only drivers get pushed beyond the breaking point, tossed aside and they have a new one in the truck same day. Also Canada only rates, even for company drivers, are about 30% lower than Canada/US drivers. Companies are so desperate for Canada/US drivers, esp those with FAST cards, they actually get a tiny amount of respect and home time. Canada only, they don't give a ####, 8 hours and 15 mins you better be rolling, day, night, bad weather, go now or you're fired. 3-6 weeks out, only 36hours at home, just a joke. US guys can still do 11/3 or 14/2 schedules, but I've been hearing the "36 only" is being pushed on them for home time as well.

@fedupvandriver If you really wanna come here and drive, I STRONGLY suggest you stay away from freight. Start contacting construction companies in Alberta/Sask, lots of Irish and English people already working those jobs, as drivers and equipment operators. Better money than OTR/Freight, home every night, no shortage of work. If you must do freight, look into private fleets like Safeway Sobeys, Frito-Lays, Pepsi, XTL/Costco. Avoid Loblaws, Coke Cola, Old Dutch, Walmart Fleet.

had read that if I wanted in as a new driver I’d be doing OTR anyway. Assuming I was legally able to run to the US, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Time at home wouldn’t be a huge issue as I’d be thousands of miles away from home lol.

appreciate the list of companies, that’s a huge help and exactly the kind of info I’m after. Thank you
