    Hi
Im just about ready to start my owner operator career and am trying to understand fuel cards. The place I will sign on to offers me a fuel card to use but I am curious why it's not better to use my own credit card and fill up at a reg station. For example at the Lowes near me todays price is $4.53 but the Raceway down the street is $3.87. That's a difference of 66c per gallon. So what's the advantage of the fuel cards and would they work at discount stations?

    Thanks for your help

Depending upon fleet size you may pay less than the advertised price w/ a fleet card. I’m sure there’s some good posts on here somewhere on which one is better than another. There’s some cards that work at almost any station in a network. Keep in mind if you are new and doing 48 or close to it, only the big truck stops are in the gps. It may take a while to figure out what smaller stations along your route take them. A cc works almost anywhere but you might miss out on a discount.
(I have never been an o/o. Just what I have picked up from listening to others, don’t listen to me. )

Call me a hater, but if you don't understand fuel cards and how they work, you're not ready to be an owner operator.

It's not, but it's better than no discount at all. My first company I leased to, they only gave 21-27 cents a gallon off, depending on which chain. Current company I'm leased to gives pretty good discounts at Love's, buy I've seen it cheaper on mudflap sometimes. Not enough to make it worth going out of route, tho.

FLHT and Diesel Dave Thank this.

21-27 c a gallon discount on an overpriced price doesn't make sense to me when I can get it down the road for 66c a gallon less. A simple app like gas buddy will pull up the prices in the neighborhood.
