The other thread about the WLL of the spools got me to thinking about adding D rings to my trailer. It is a 53' steel step deck.
Anyone ever done this? Where did you weld them? Would be nice to have a few higher rated tie down points to use when securing heavy equipment.

How are you going to rate the D ring. It takes $$$ to get those things approved. Those are usually a factory option. I'm not sure that you can get legal aftermarket D rings with a high WWL. But I could be wrong.

You can buy weld on D-rings that have a WLL stamped on them. It ultimately depends on the quality of the welder attaching them and what they are weld to though.

Yeah, you are going to have to find someone that would take on the liability should something happen and your load comes off.
I can weld and my old boss wanted me to build something like a dolly for him. I told him he could hug a root because I was not taking on that liability. I am not a certified welder, even though I have yet to have a weld break on me, I was not willing to take that chance. Especially with him.... LOL -
We just bought the same rings that Talbert uses and welded them on. I added 22 to my trailer last year before we painted it. I haven't had a problem yet, securement points on a trailer aren't required to be rated. But the guy who welded mine is a good welder and I'm confident in them.

Should be pretty easy to find someone to weld them on... The bigger question is where would you put them?
I personally would have no problems welding them on, but I may not agree to weld them on where you want them... -
I was planning on welding them myself. I picked up a 110 volt harbor freight welder at harbor freight last week and figured this would be a good way to learn.
Just kidding I have been welding about 25 years. I weld stuff several times a week and have over 10k in welding equipment. I have built several trailers, welded numerous hitches, built pintle hitch plates for dump trucks, etc. I am not really worried about welding the D rings they are designed for that and I would probably use the 1" ones which have a lot of room to weld on.
My main concern really is where to put them. Quite frankly the spools welded in between the rub rail and the channel iron on the side of the trailer look like they could hold a lot more than 5,400lb to me. I wonder if the whole channel itself can't take much more than that as a point load because the angle being pulled on it isn't a really strong direction for a channel. This leaves welding them to the main frame under the trailer and running the chains up through the rub rail which would put a weird squeezing effect on the sides of the trailer. -
Well the working load limit is 1/3 the breaking strength so yes it will hold more. But not for DOT calculations.

By "main frame under the trailer", are you referring to your main beams? 53' step deck, you'll want to be careful welding to your main beams, as they are most likely heat treated...
