Adding a small amount of Gasoline to Diesel Fuel to Improve Quality???

This maybe playing with fire, but I heard of old timers doing this up in the northern states to help during cold weather by adding 1 gallon of gasoline to each 150 gallon tank diesel fuel that is suppose to keep fuel from gelling????

Does this work and would it also improve the combustion of todays poor quality diesel fuel by adding gasoline at a 150:1 ratio?

Does gasoline even mix with diesel fuel?

Could gasoline eat up fuel lines or seals in fuel system?

The Power Service Cetane Boost in the gray jug smells like it may have some kick like gasoline does and it does not mess anything up.

    Mooseontheloose Thanks this.

I'd probably stick with the Power Service myself.

Off the subject, "You've been sniffing the cetane booster again, haven't you?" will be added to my expression library.

We use to mix gasoline with diesel as an degeling additive.
The engines were a lot different then and I wouldn't think about doing it to these engines.
Yes, gasoline will mix with diesel. They're both petroleum.
But we use to have to start the engines on gasoline, then when it had warmed up a bit, switch over to diesel. These were pre war era engines, to give you an idea.
And they were in tractors, not trucks.
Trucks ran on gasoline up as late as the early 60's.

The pre-2003 motors should be OK to add 1 gallon of gasoline to 150 gallons of Diesel?

The quality of diesel is so bad now and I am searching for an inexpensive additive to help without damaging the motor.

The newer 2003 and up motors with all the EPA crap on them may not be good to add gasoline to diesel that might damage the exhaust system in them.

No. the pricipal by which diesel engines work is incongruent with gasoline.
Diesel is not bad today. That's an urban legend.
Basically, newer diesel... LSD and ULSD are simple diesel with the sulpher removed.
    It makes the fuel cleaner.
Diesel is what's left over after refining gasoline, naptha, and more from it.
Take a bit more out and you have bunker fuel.
There is no good reason and lots of bad ones to thin your diesel with gasoline.

I agree, the diesel is further refined today and cleaner than it ever was. If there are problems with fuel quality it is usually due to improper handling or storage at the local level. Too many people have it in their heads that fuel needs additives to increase performance and reliability. This is becoming a big urban legend for sure! Biodiesels and other alternative blends are only somewhat recommended to an extent before problems will arise. Nothing wrong with a little treatment here and there to prevent gelling as long it is designed for diesel.

gas in diesel decreases fuel milage, its heat output is lower, but igmition temperature lower (lower zetane ratio) The only thing it helps - prevent gel in fuel at below zero temperatures and easier to start engine.

But I would advivce use AntyGel ore aircraft jet fuel (not more 10%, else -add some motor oil in fuel, but semisyntetic).

Kerosene is what old timers used to use, well some.

The diesel now burns cleaner but doesn't burn as hot or ignite like the older stuff, isn't that how it goes???

Kerosene is a high grade diesel fuel. Works in jet planes too. :biggrin_25517:

Mixing gasoline and diesel fuel will cause bad fuel millage, poor power as well as your engine might be a bit more loud ( knocking sound), but will fire-up in cold. No more than 10 % of gasoline in very cold zones with bad diesel fluid. Nowadays diesel is good, better use anti-gell aditives if needed instead of gasoline.
