I’m new to owning my own truck. I am fairly new to trucking so I don’t know all the lingo.
Help me out...what is all the plastic called that extends the sleeper and raises a mid roof to the top of a van? I’ve learned the sides that cover up the fuel tanks are fairings.
I get 5 mpg with my 2012 Volvo D13 10 speed. I don’t drive with my foot in it.
Would all the extra plastic help with fuel mileage? Where would I get it? And is color matching done? Ballpark costs?
Im sitting next to a similar Volvo and it looks like 6 pieces on each side from the top to the bottom. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the expense to add all of that to mine.
Thanks in advance.
Add the fairings or not???

The ones on the sides of the cab are called cab extenders.
The big one on top is called an air dam.D.Tibbitt and bigkev1115 Thank this. -
So I need fairings, cab extenders, and an air dam. Cool thx. You think it helps fuel mileage enough for the investment?
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
I don't know what your total cost will be. But you should go up in mpg, depending on how you drive, to 6.5 or 7ish.
Compared to 5 mpg, at a 100K miles a year, that's $15K in fuel you'll save.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
How big is the gap from the sleeper to the trailer?
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -

If you are pulling a van trailer the air dam is the most important.
I thought most trucks already have the cab extenders behind the sleeper.
If you work on your own truck you probably won't like the fairings... I don't think you can get under the truck unless you jack it up or remove something.
Maybe there is something else going on with your truck that you only are getting 5 miles to the gallon? -
If you are a flatbedder forget it.
Its kind of nice to be a midroof, you can get under certain bridges say 12 foot 3 inches with your stack at 12 foot two. IF you were a flatbedder....
If you were in Nogales all that empty space above your midroof sleeper becomes a hiding place for illegals. They will absolutely go up there and snuggle hoping to get past the Border patrol checkpoints.
5 miles to the gallon is a problem with something else. My 1994 midroof volvo got 6 even most of the time with a covered wagon. -
I am pulling dry van. I have pretty long wheel base - there is 6ft or more between trailer and cab. It’s more than most dry van haulers.
I left my options open when I first started in case I wanted to pull flatbed or tanker. But after being on the road for a bit, I’m doing good with van, so I doubt I’ll change to anything else unless it’s reefer...D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
How heavy are you usually pulling? 5mpg is horrible for a D13.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
